Hey, why not, it's a free country. I don't think it's silly except
how they're filling a lot of time every day on it. Easy enough
for me to ignore.

Neat. My paternal grandparents generation moved here from
Ireland, but none of them were Lords of anything. Heh.

They seem down to earth, to me. Better matched than some
marriages I've known.

Really. He seems determined to serve like many of the people
there in conflicts.

Another aspect of the wedding, aside from the actual direct costs are
the indirect benefits. The Herald (of Glasgow) has a Headline:
"Scotland to make millions out of the royal romance"

Hey, that's a nice benefit. I don't know who's paying for what when
it comes to the wedding, but I figured it would come back times over
in tourism.

I heard the wedding will cost 5 million and security will be 30
million. Insane!

The Royals are little more than a tourist attraction. The wedding will
generate billions in tourist revenue.

Nope. There were more than 16.4 million international visitors to London
in 2006.

What difference does it make? That was the number reported on the site I
checked. It could have gone up or dow couple million over the last five
years. It doesn't really matter. The fact remains that there are
millions of international tourists in London, and the tourist revenues
generated are mostly from UM tourists as you suggested.

So did my maternal grandparents parents, but they were poor. I've heard
stories about my mom working in her parents small grocery store when she
was a kid in MA. Her dad (my grandfather I never met) was in the US
military, not sure which branch. He died young.

There's a lot about the history of my family on both sides that I want
to learn more about. I have the most amazing photos that I found after
my paternal grandmother moved to a nursing home and we cleaned out her
house to sell it. I saved them. My dad's side of the family came from
Lithuania. A lot of the photos are so old that I'm afraid to look at
them. I need to look into preserving them. There's one with a military
troop of some kind. It has to be from the 1800s.

Who are paying for the whole opera with their taxes.

Which makes me wonder which goverment-supported
tourist attractions have paid for themselves.
I doubt very much the Great Wall of China has.
Likewise, the pyramids in Egypt probably haven't
paid for themselves in tourism, but may have been
worth the expense in terms of national pride, like
our own Apollo program.

The Parthenon and Taj Mahal are maybes. On the
other hand, Ludwig's castle paid for itself in
only 13 years and has since generated tons of
money from tourism.

It's really amazing what information they come up with on that
show Who Do You Think You Are? Military records from way back,
sometimes photographs. I just went to the Ellis Island site to see
the passenger lists that showed my grandparents. Eerie.

Definitely, you don't want to lose them to humidity or whatever. Scan
them if you can, at least.

It's amazing what's on the internet. My son was able to look up my

The season is finished, but I imagine you could find episodes
online if you looked. It was on NBC. They trace celebrity
ancestries. Ashley Judd's was pretty interesting. I haven't
seen them all, but it was really crazy to see what information
they'd come up with. He

First-- Search for some sets of interview questions and ask all the
older folks who still survive before they die next week.

Then I'd have to recommend ancestry.com. It is a commercial site &
I'm not sure how much you can find for free anymore- but lots of
libraries have it for free- and they give free trials frequently.

You can kill a couple hours [days. . weeks. .] at the free site-
genealogy.com, too.

Caution-- if you have any interest in history, people, or puzzles,
genealogy can be addictive. It took me a decade to get back to my
regularly scheduled life.<g> [and I backslide from time to time--
but I love it]

Some people don't care about family history. When cleaning out my
father's stuff we came across a bunch of old sepia photos that looked to
be from the Boer War. We didn't know who they were so my brother threw
them out. My younger brother later learned that we had a great uncle
who fought in that war.

I recently made contact with a distant cousin who has given me all sorts
of good information about our family. I forwarded stuff to all three
brothers. Only one of them got to me about it. The other two probably
didn't bother to open them. If you are going to dig up the family
history,be prepared to do it for your own sake because the others
probably don't care.

I have found pictures of a number of my forefathers internet. I found
one of my 4X great grandfather who had been a Hessien serving in New
York who settled in Quebec. I found several pictures of my 3X great
grandfather who fought in the War of 1812 and later in the Upper Canada
Rebellion. I also found one of his son, who had moved back to the US and
fought for the south in the Civil War. He was with Stonewall Jackosn
when he was killed, escorted his body back to Virginia and was then on
Lee's staff and was present at the surrender at Appomatox.

Wow, fantastic! Was all that on a genecology web site or the regular
internet?

I resisted the urge to go further OT when I first read this-- but
curiosity is killing me. Was there an organized effort to get
pictures of the surviving Hessians up there like Hillard's, in the
states, where he went [on his own dime] across the country in the mid
1800s photographing [what he thought were] the last 1/2 dozen
veterans? Or was he one of the few who had portraits done?

That's a slightly different study than I've been doing.<g>

I don't know how 'regular' it is-- but the Library of Congress'
American Memories Collection has more treasures on it than you can see
in a year or two of browsing-
