That's exactly why I like cooking. I can make foods that cost much,
much more if I have someone else make them. I can afford those foods
more often if I make them myself.

I'm betting that's the reason most here have learned to cook well.

Plus I enjoy cooking - it's recreation, not a chore. I've been having
a lot of fun with it and don't repeat myself enough to feel like I'm
in a rut. We ate out last night because I don't make Mexican food
very often and we both came home slightly disappointed. It didn't
taste as good as it usually would to us. We came to the conclusion
that what I've been making at home has been really good so we're just
spoiled.

I often refer to myself as a "cook hobbyist." I enjoy cooking,
particularly cooking for dinner parties, cocktail parties, etc., where
I can try my hand at new dishes. It's always fun to try a new dish
that might push my skill set, for instance. Or have an excuse to haul
out an old recipe that gets ignored in the day-to-day.

I don't consider that I cook out of passion, much more out of
survival... for the last 30 years or so very few eateries I've
frequented, no matter how steep their price range, serve what I
consider meals that are barely passable... I've gotten tired of
wasting my time, money, and having my expectations of a good meal
dashed by over priced crap presented slipshod by patronizing
douchebags. Actually as I've gotten older I no longer cook so much
because I like it, let alone passion... food has become a means to an
end but I happen to like good food well prepared. I no longer like to
cook so I cook as quickly as possible, yet still I take no short cuts
that cause quality to suffer... I guess I've been cooking for so long
that nowadays I cook out of instinct, I no longer need to think about
it any more than how my automobile finds it's way home, how I can get
to the terlit in the dark of night, pee, and return to bed, same as I
can shave without a mirror. With age I now do a lot of things
instinctively, I guess I've become my cats.

Couldn't agree more. I like my food to taste how I envision it, so as long as I have the time, I'd rather make my own food if I can. There are some dishes I can't make, though, so I find a good place that serves that dish and go there whenever I get the craving.

I don't know that I'm passionate about cooking, but I do enjoy good food.
You can easily eat better for less by doing it yourself.

I have friends that are second rate cooks, but we still enjoy a meal at
their house because of the shared company and good times.

For me food is the connection between me and machines. Especially the
strong connect between me, the scales, blood pressure machine and the
Bowflex. Yes the sensual joy of food, great enjoyment followed by quilt.

That is so true, I'm glad you're doing your mom food blog because your
kid will really appreciate it in a few years. Mine are at the age
where they're trying to think of what I used to cook when I was busy
and didn't have the time to devote to it like I do now.

Isn't that the truth? When you see them take a bite and do that little
hesitation thing and then roll their eyes with pleasure! It's like
they're having a food orgasm. That look gives me the best feeling
there is in relation to food.

BINGO!

Wanting to eat WELL.

If I were rich, I'd eat at great restaurants. I'm not. I'm not one
who gets all jazzed about putzing around in the kitchen. They don't
call food prep "scut work" cuz it's fun. But, if that's what it takes
to get the best out of food and eat better than the prefab garbage at
the stupormkt, then so be it.

Of course you can do both, but I feel more like the second

Same here, only I'll add that I'd also have a staff of people all over the

All you smart-asses who say you cook because you like to eat, fie on
you. Everyone knows you can eat (even at home) without doing much (or
any) cooking. So fie, I say. Fie!

People who don't give a shit about cooking (if they're not spammers or
trolls) don't spend their recreational time on cooking newsgroups.

Holubky. (Though I pronounce it huh-LOOB-kee, I've never heard anyone

Are the people who responded to this thread REALLY passionate about cooking?
PASSIONATE? It's an entertaining hobby for me, and I enjoy it, but it's
quite a stretch from there to passion.

ObFood: My planned Easter dessert is a panna cotta with a passionfruit
sauce.

You're a very different sort of cook and eater than I am, and you
really are very honest about your relationship with food. You're
obviously not a supertaster, but you're very discriminating about
ingredients. You very seldom *slum*, but often go somewhat over the
top with combinations. I sometimes read your posts with fascination,
though seldom with a desire to emulate.

I do cook with passion, and am far more conservative in my choices of
ingredients. It's not a hobby, but a part of maximizing pleasure for
myself, family and sometimes friends. I almost never critique your
*recipes* because I don't have the ability to even understand most of
them. I do understand the crappy ingredient recipes I see, because
I've been subjected to them.
