If you have the orginal paperwork that came with the computer, it should
have the serial number of the OS. Call the manufacturer and explain the
problem. Perhaps they can help.

Sorry Andy, I don't speak computer. It's written in English, but I
didn't understand a word you said. I backed up pictures, documents
etc on a portable hard drive, if that's what you were trying to tell
me. I still have no idea how to make an installation disk and they
didn't tell me to make a boot disk (how can you boot a computer with
no OS?), so I feel like they're trying to pick my pocket. I've had a
different computer's hard drive replaced under warranty and my OS was
replaced.

Hopefully, I can hunt and peck on my portable HD.

No, I didn't get it back and that's normal for warranty work. When my
Dell HD died, them keeping it was part of the conditions. Not sure
why they kept it, but I assume it was so they could recoup from
whoever sold them the defective part.

Maybe you're used to getting your HD back because you build your own
computers, but I buy mine premade and preinstalled with what I need.

<laughing> I see you know as much about computers as I do, maybe a
little less.
