Question for all you Penzey's users

Those of you who have a store nearby or order on line...

Have you ever used their soup bases, especially their seafood base?
How are they? How is the sodium content?

We've used a few of them. They are very good flavor, but do have a higher
sodium content than we would normally use. Use care with the amount, but
the flavors to add to the overall dish

The Penzey's chicken soup base has 610mg sodium per 3/4 tsp
Watkins chicken soup base has 430mg sodium per 1 1/2 tsp

Never used any seafood base so can't help you there.

Finding a decent seafood stock is difficult. It's best if you can get the
ingredients to make your own.We really like "Better than Bouillon" products
although we use the organic low sodium chicken product 90% of the time.
That's excellent, particularly if you want to spruce up what's in Campbell's
canned chicken stock. It's quite rich, and will spruce up most anything on
the stove. That sounds sacrilegious, but it's true.

I haven't tried their seafood product. I'm going to.
http://www.superiortouch.com/retail/...s/82/fish-base
It contains cod. The Penzey product contains clam, crab, and "fish". The
latter term worries me a bit. Which river in southeast asia does it come
from?
Knorr, the bouillon cube outfit, makes seafood, shrimp, pork, and ham
bouillon cubes. The only place I've ever seen them is in a Chinese market.

Look for the larger container of the organic low sodium chicken product. We
buy it at "Smart and Final". Most supermarkets screw you for this kind of
product. However the "Better Than" products are cheaper than the Penzey's
product.

Back to the stockpot

The "Better than Bouillon" Organic Reduced Sodium product has 350mg per tsp.
1 tsp makes one cup of stock.

Have not used the seafood base.

> How are they?

My recollection is that they're okay. Not sure they're better than a
supermarket product.
