Crisco salad (from Calling All Cooks 2, p. 553)
Cream 1 cup Crisco and 1 cup sugar, beat until fluffy. Add 2 eggs,
blend well. Add one small can crushed drained pineapple and 1 cup
chopped pecans. Place a layer of graham crackers in a long Pyrex
dish, cover with half of the Crisco mixture. Add another layer of
graham crackers and the rest of the Crisco mixture. Top with a layer

3/4 cup crisp bacon, 1 cup grated cheese, 6 cups popped popcorn.

Snickers salad. These are from Cooks.com.

FUDGE STRIPED COOKIE SALAD

1 c. buttermilk
3 oz. pkg. instant vanilla pudding
8 oz. carton Cool Whip
15 oz. can mandarin oranges (drained)
2 sections fudge striped cookies (crushed) (about 10-14 cookies)
Mix together pudding and buttermilk. Fold in Cool Whip, oranges and
one section of crushed fudge stripe cookies. Sprinkle remaining
crushed cookies on top of salad.

SNICKERS® SALAD
6 SNICKERS® candy bars, chopped in sm. squares
6 Granny Smith green apples, chopped in sm. pieces
1 (8 oz.) container Cool Whip
Mix and chill. Enjoy as salad or dessert.

how are these salads? Cool whip, cookies, candy bars, jello,
puddings....They seem more like desserts to me. (Except for the crisco
one, that just sounds like a disgusting mess)
So glad I was never exposed to crap like this growing up.

Salad applies to almost anything that is a mixture of things. Think
fruit salad, or that ambrosia salad with the little marshmallows and
cool whip and jello....

But I agree with you they don't sound like anything I'd want to try.
The popcorn and cookies would get all soggy and nasty, unless the
whole thing were mixed up on the spot, I'd imagine.

Fruit Salad, I get. Cut up fruits, maybe some mint leaves...a splash
of champagne vinegar but it's not needed. To me, "salad" should be
inherently healthy and "light", as in, not heavy. I don't do mayo, so
even potato salad, cole slaw and pasta salads would fit the category.
I never understood "Ambrosia" either. BLeah. I never understood
calling a jello mold a "salad".

I have made that, minus the egg, with just enough mayo to moisten, and
it is very good as a summertime lunch. I don't measure, but the
amount of mayo listed seems excessive.

Raw! These were the days when eggs were fresh and safe. Don't
worry, the Jello will preserve you.

Thanks, Tara. I actually googled them all and found everything
except the Crisco salad. That's got to be about the grossest thing
I've ever heard of bar mushrooms, beets, and coffee. ;-)

I never understood the whole jello salad concept. Except for one
that has carrots in it I can't figure out how any of them are salads!
But the Snickers Salad, et al., is even less salad-like that the
typical jello salad. I just don't know what people are thinking.

What makes it gross....the crisco/sugar mixture is nothing more than
Kroger Deli cake frosting that is tinted into colors not found on
earth...and they sell tens of thousands of the frosted lovelies every
week. Bet you bought three dozen cupcakes to take to your kids
third grade birthday party in elementary school. That is the frosting
that comes in five gallon buckets they buy fifty at a time. Didn't
it strike you odd how greasy your teeth felt after eating a piece of
that cake?

This concoction is just made at home....not in behind the cake
decorating case in the market.

You twins are safe! Crisco will never enter this household LOL. Thinking

We had a birthday cake at TMU's craft group this morning. As per my
usual practice, the lurid fluorescent pink 'icing' or 'frosting' got
scraped off the top and layers before being eaten. The colour was enough
to put me off anyway :)

Yes, that is what makes it disgusting. I hate those so-called
frostings that are made with Crisco or other Crisco-like shortenings.
I don't care whether it's made in a bakery or at home. It's
gross! Blecch!
