Hemp protein vs. Whey protein

I do a fruit smoothie for breakfast in the mornings. I had been using
whey protein in my morning smoothies until I got a few comments from
others about hemp protein, so I decided to try some.

I must admit I like the hemp protein waaaaaaay better than the
whey.

Here's why: first, the whey protein makes the smoothie really 'poofy'
and sort of 'gummy' with an almost slimy texture; second, the whey
protein really pumps up the volume of the smoothie and makes it too
filling. The hemp protein does not expand and does not make the
smoothie change texture and it does not increase the volume of the
smoothie. It doesn't mask any flavors of the fruit the way the whey
does as well.

I figure it's the difference between dairy and vegetable. And I'm
preferring the vegetable both for texture and mouth feel.

Does anyone else here do morning smoothies and do you use whey protein
or hemp protein? I'd love to have your reactions to both.

Thanks for the report. I have not yet used hemp protein (I've tried
hemp milk). My understanding is it is complete protein, as is
whey protein. It is also probably no more expensive, if you're
limiting yourself to north-American produced products.

It is comparable in price. It is a complete protein. I've used two
brands now and I can't tell any difference
in them. Both are organic. One I bought at Fred Meyer, the other at
my regular health food store. I'm glad to know that I can get it at
more than one place and that the price is comparable and it's not
really expensive.

I remember someone here reporting that they waited till they had their
smoothie partially blended before adding the whey protein simply
because of the texture and volume.....that is what made my decision
about buying the hemp when I ran out of whey.

Thanks to whoever that was!! It was a great decision.

I try to have a bowl of oatmeal or a protein shake for breakfast every
morning (not going all that well, but I'm getting better) I use whey
protein concentrate from Walmart. I just bought a tub of the
strawberry flavored to see if it tastes less weird than the vanilla.

I make a kind of thin smoothie using fresh or frozen fruit, frozen
banana, and lowfat milk or water. Then add a scoop of protein powder
and process it on LOW until it is incorporated. Do not blend it on HI
or (heaven forbid) "Liquefy" or "Frappe", because it will expand and
whip into a nasty slimy meringue.

I had one this morning using rehydrated dried apricots, frozen peach
slices, a half a banana, and the strawberry whey. It wasn't very
good, but it wasn't bad.

Never heard of hemp protein; if I saw it in the store I would guess
that it was just trendy rather than useful. Something Woody Harrelson
would sell to try to confuse hemp with marihuana. (I prefer the old
spelling that matches the unconstitutional 1930's tax law.) But maybe
I'll try it now if it's not too expensive. But I have over 3 pounds
of whey protein to use up first.

I'd be curious about the ingredients in the Wal Mart whey
protein....especiall since it's 'flavored'. ew.

I used only pure whey protein with no additives or flavorings, why
would you want any artificial ingredients?

Consider trying low carb groups. A fair number of low carbers have
tried making their own smoothies and some continue making them for
years. Most of the discussion I've read compares whey, egg and soy
protein but some will have tried hemp protein.

At the smoothie place near us I've tried the same smoothie made with
whey or soy. I like the smoother fluffier texture from the whey.
