REVIEW: Safeway Select Green Bean Crisps
 

I noticed a new item at Safeway. The box describes them
as a "lightly breaded petite green bean appetizer",
which seems accurate. I really like them and plan
to buy more.

Normally, I wouldn't recommend a Safeway product, and
even less likely it would be a bean product because
of my bean sensitivity. But I've eaten two boxes of
these things, and I haven't gotten a headache. Green
beans are mostly pod rather than bean, and if I don't
eat too many I'm okay.

There used to be a Chinese restaurant near me that
made a very similar lightly breaded and fried green
bean dish, but that was two or three restaurants ago
at that location. That restaurant actually had really
good food at very reasonable prices and I was sorry to
see them go. I often would go there to order this
one dish to go.

Yes, a toaster or convection oven is best for reviving
frozen deep-fried food to get a crispy result.

You got them back in April? They only recently appeared
here. I suppose that means Safeway rolls out a new product
in stages, rather than everywhere all at once.

Wait a minute. I thought you *hated* Safeway. Because they give
your your change in dimes and nickels just to cheat you out of the
quarters you might need for laundry. Or something like that.

They sell these at Target under the "Market Pantry" label. Probably
made by the same "factory".
Tasty dipped into Ranch dressing as an appetizer.

Yes, and I hate Safeway not just for that.

But they do have a few good products, and they
are the only supermarket within walking distance,
which I do sometimes.

Their carrots used to be good, but have declined
greatly in quality recently. I do recommend their
U.S. postage stamps as at least equivalent to the
ones you can buy at Lucky.

I never claimed that I was getting *less* money back,
but I am certainly getting less *value* back from Safeway
when they implemented the change-making algorithm which
rips off the customer. Giving back four dimes and two nickels
when $0.50 is due allows Safeway to reduce the amount of change
in the till. They don't have to stock as many quarters.

To gain perhaps $0.001 on one day's interest rate on the cash
in the till, Safeway is willing to inconvenience hundreds of
customers. That is what they are doing. Safeway is ripping off
the consumer. Safeway is evil. That is one of many reasons
I hate Safeway. They abuse their customers. I shop as little
as possible at Safeway, but I do shop there when I'm walking
to a supermarket or I want the fried green beans.

As ever, I disagree with this premise. You got the correct change back
so where is your loss or inconvenience? What *they* decide to put into
their till makes no difference to me if I'm getting the correct change
back. It spends the same to me.
If I had such issues, I'd just use my debit or credit card and save the
stress.

Evil? They don't abuse customers. If they did customers would vote
with their feet and go somewhere else to shop. However, they do abuse
their employees with standard corporate practices that discriminate
against older workers.

come out back East and then in LA before they hit our market.

If they could make that $0.001 extra profit by giving you
50 pennies for $0.50 in change, you would really have no
problem with that? That is exactly what I am talking about.
Safeway is perfectly willing to inconvenience their customers
by giving them tons of dimes and nickels in change rather
than quarters to make something like an additional $0.001
per shift. That tells me Safeway despises their customers.
I see no reason not to despise them right back. I hate
Safeway, for very good reasons.

I was surprised to see them on the menu at my local pub place,
started maybe a couple of months ago. I guess TGIF started
something. I love those fried green beans, but I'd kill for some
