My trip to Berkeley is coming up quick! Question about the weather -- I
notice from their wedding web page the current weather is cold (to me). I
know we talked about this, but it's in the 60s and 70s! Bbbbbbbbbbrrrr lol

Ok, so their menu looks a little fru fru to me.

Where you will be will not be as cool as it is in West Berkeley
(where I live), which is closer to the bay. It might cool off
after about 8:00 p.m., but the larger problem will probably be
mosquitoes if you're outside that late.

You can look on wunderground.com for a user weather station
that is close to your wedding location. Temperatures vary
alot.

Oh, I know. But this is a food group. I will definitely enjoy the
company and looking forward to meeting my cousin's new wife. She has to be
special for him to pick her.

Sounds like a great menu to me! Not "fru fru" at all. If you're lucky
you'll be able to have a little of everything instead of set meals (beef
or chicken or vegetarian with only a particular side)
I'd want to try it all!

It isn't uncommon to have one basic salad at a function. No one *has* to
eat it. They can't always please everyone exactly but the selections are
usually tried and true and popular with the most folks.

I suspect that those choosing the Vegetable Paella get the Couscous, and
the beef or chicken breast diners get the potato salad. These are
typical catered function type meals which hold their own when made and
held in ready for large seated meal gatherings. Have you ever received
a invitation where the RSVP card asked for you to tic off your meal
choice selection (beef, chicken or vegetarian)?

But both of these seem fruity to me. That's what made me wonder.

But you'll probably only get one or the other which is predetermined
based on your entree.

Does she have malaria? I'd check. I got malaria in San Franciso in
the early '70's.

And for today's weddings the couple often goes to a "tasting session"
sponsored by the caterer at which there are a wide variety of dishes to
try, and they select their menu from this tasting.

Berkeley can be positively hot in the summer. Not unusual to have high 90s.
Usually the summer days are high 80s and the nights a very pleasant low 60s.
Being so close to the Bay you get pretty mild summers up there.

September is the warmest month with an average high of 72 F.
Low-mid 90's is considered unusually hot, and there may be one or
two dozen days per year that get that high. High 90's is
positively unusual.

I see though that the record high is 106.

And it will be warmer up in the Berkeley Hills due to the inversion
layer. Weather statistics tend to be gathered at the post
office downtown.

What did you order, or is this a buffet? The vegetable paella got my
attention so I looked it up. I don't know why they didn't make it
vegetarian and sub out the chicken stock with vegetable stock, but
here's a sample.

Roasted-Vegetable Paella
Southern Living, APRIL 2004

Makes 4 to 6 servings

Serve with a tossed salad or gazpacho.


3 cups chicken broth
1 1/4 teaspoons saffron threads
1 large red bell pepper, cut into strips
1 large green bell pepper, cut into strips
1/2 pound zucchini, sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 large onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped
3 plum tomatoes, chopped
1 1/2 cups uncooked Arborio rice
Lemon wedges (optional)

Bring chicken broth and saffron threads to a boil over medium-high
heat; reduce heat, and simmer mixture 20 minutes.

Toss together bell pepper strips, sliced zucchini, and 1 tablespoon
oil; place in an even layer in a 15- x 10-inch jellyroll pan.
Sprinkle evenly with oregano and thyme.

Bake at 400° for 25 to 30 minutes or until tender, stirring once.

Sauté onion, garlic, and jalapeño in remaining 1 tablespoon hot oil in
a large skillet over medium heat 20 to 25 minutes or until onion is
caramelized. Add tomatoes, and cook, stirring often, 3 to 5 minutes
or until liquid is absorbed.

Add uncooked rice and chicken broth mixture to skillet; bring to a
boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 20 to 30 minutes, stirring once
after 15 minutes. Stir in bell pepper and zucchini, and cook 5
minutes.

Serve with lemon wedges, if desired.

Yes we are and no they aren't. Half my family lives there and has for 34
years now. My mother has lived there since 76. I spent a whole summer
there once and we had a whole week of 90+ weather interspersed with upper
80s and some low 100s. It can also be cold as a witch's elbow. Summer
evenings were always so pleasant.

My mother lives on Hillside Avenue above Cal Berkeley. That is where I have
spent most of my time there.

I never saw an option to order, and I don't know if it's buffet. Probably
not.

I'm going up to Connecticut next weekend for a wedding and look forward
to reporting back. It will be a "mixed wedding" as the groom is half
Italian and raised Jewish, while the bride is WASP. Wonder what the food
will be. I'm kinda confident that there will be an open bar though.

Alice Waters talked a lot abouit the many micro-climates up there and how it
made a big difference in the produce you could get.

I think he is using "san francisco" loosely. We do get mosquitos if
people have standing water somewhere, but malaria is not something
anyone worries about.
