She lives in Ocatillo, the epicenter of the quake. Her cupboards flew open and glassware and dinnerware flew out, bookshelves fell over, microwave fell off the kitchen counter and the refrigerator door flew open and all the food spewed out onto to the floor. Then to make matters worse, the electricity went off. I offered to go over after work today and help with the clean up, but right now she's just trying to deal with it emotionally. She's too scared to sleep in the house and is sleeping in her truck. I wish I could make it all better for her, this sucks, it really sucks. Koko, if you have any breakable stuff (figurines and such), Aaron Bros. has earthquake putty. I found it when I was trying to figure out how to outsmart my housecleaner, who uses her dusting as an opportunity to knock every picture in my house askew. A little dab of earthquake putty on the corner of each picture did the trick. I then used it to "glue" down some other breakable pieces, just in case. Won't help dishes and the like, but it'll help a wee bit for ornaments. She even mentioned securing the bookshelves to the walls. We hear this all the time, just don't take the time to do it soon enough. I'm even thinking about securing the kitchen cabinets with child proof latches to keep the contents from ending up on the floor. I pray to God that I won't have to be happy I did it. Y'know, there are some extents to which I will not go and this is one of 'em. The sheer aggravation of childproof latches on a day-to-day basis would drive me wonky. I might consider it for the cupboard my grandmother's china is in, but that's about it. Everything else is replaceable. And insured. After the Northridge quake had hit in '94, and after we had checked the apartment complex we were in (Granada Hills, on Devonshire) to make sure everyone was alive, I went on a (motorbike) tour around the area. I intended taking lots of pics to show everyone back here what had happened...... but after about 3, I stopped. Looking at the devestation, the shattered dreams and lives of people on the streets.... I couldn't take any more pictures. The people looked exactly the same as civilian 'survivors' in a war zone. Aftershocks can continue for years after the initial earthquake.
