No, that is what I us to apply makeup. ;-) A tamale spreader is similar
to a notched trowel, so it will only apply a measured amount. You can
adjust the amount of masa by the way you hold the spreader.

We are going back to Mexico this weekend and we are planning to buy
one. At one of the Hispanic markets, they had a spreader free, if you
bought 3 bags of husks, but I already have 2 bags.

We use an offset palette knife for spreading the masa and some
industrial strength something or nother as the bench scraper.

That will work just fine, but will take a lot more skill to spread
the dough evenly thick.
