Default Phoenix ? ? ?

I find I will be in Phoenix May 12 thru the 16th. I'll be there for
an ABA Equal Justice Conference. The conference itself will be at the
Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs (11111 N 7th Street) bit I will be at
the overflow hotel Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort (7687 N 16th
Street).

Breakfasts and lunches I will have to have in the hotel. A couple of
the lunches and a dinner have speeches etc and will be at the hotel
but I will have at least two dinners on my own.

I'm looking for restaurant/foodie suggestions. Phoenix "special" or
local food and places to eat it. I'll try to talk some brave soul
from the conference into going with me.

Suggestions are welcome and my thanks are great.

Pizzeria Bianco. It's a long wait though..but considered one of the
best pizzas in the US. If you can get 5 more people to go with you,
you can get a reservation. They do have a wine bar where you can
wait.
http://www.pizzeriabianco.com/

I ate there on a Wednesday, and was lucky to be with some other
RFC'ers and we were pretty close to being first in line... The pizzas
are simple, in the Neapolitan style... I think the owner, Chris
Bianco, has won a James Beard award.

The Phoenix (area) Mexican food is very different - ask at the hotel desk
"if you were going out for Mexican food where would you go"?

Go there.

Asking the front desk clerk has always worked for me.

BTDT; hated it and "The Experience." Gave the place two tries and will
_never_ give them another dime of my money.

Do you have transportation available or must everything be within walking
distance of the hotels?

If you have transportation, Kinfolk's BBQ was a very good find. Waldo's BBQ
was another enjoyable meal for most of Clan Ranger (Daughter-unit Alpha
found the brisket to be too tough and gamy.)

If you're in the mood for beef, Pinnacle Peak's Patio in Scottsdale.
The good quality (but not outrageously expensive) steaks are grilled
over mesquite wood fire. Standard accompaniments are simple green
salad and what they call 'cowboy beans' (pintos). So it's a downhome
kind of steakhouse, tasty, substantial food that won't break the
budget. If your accompanying brave soul is male, warn him not to wear
a tie or they'll (loudly) cut it off and tack it on the wall.

Other than that place (and it was some years ago) we've not found
foodie destinations in Phoenix. -aem

Blair Houghton, and Readah...remember them?
We all loved it. I think we got every single pizza on the menu...and
they were all fantastic.
This was back in 1994.

And don't pay attention to that Ranger person... Our pizzas were
fantastic, and the service was great. We sat at the bar. Chris
Bianco, who was there making pizzas, smiled at us.

I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Bonus points if he say he'd go to his mother's house. Double bonus points
if he sends you there.

Best food I ever had in the area was at Il Pescatore in Scottsdale.
http://www.nileguide.com/destination...-pescatore/395
524

When we ate there they were located in a strip mall on Scottsdale Road
and Thunderbird, I think. I do NOT know if the info in the link above
is still valid.

Neither; Ranger doesn't use his girls' real names online. The nickname
lets us know which of the twins he's referencing. Wait'll you hear him
talk about Spawn. :-)

Twins? Really?

http://www.recfoodcooking.com/mug/sh...d%20family.jpg

Could be. I always assumed "Alpha" meant oldest, and "Beta" next
oldest, and, of course, Spawn would be the youngest.

Really. He's talked about that here, I'm sure, on their birthday; I
don't think I'm giving away any secrets.

Does this mean I have to come up with aliases for my
cats when I talk about them, lest I violate their network
privacy?

There are a certain number of cat mutilators in the area, yes,
but it's been several years since I've heard any reports of this.
Also there are people who scoop up loose cats and sell them to
the labs at Berkeley.

Years ago, a cat disappeared under suspicious circumstances and
I'm still not sure it didn't end up in a lab.

There's been pressure on the labs not to accept random-source
animals so maybe this is less of a problem now. Plus we
have ID chips in them (I would hope the animal testers would
scan them first, right?)

One would hope so. There are still too many outdoor cats in our
neighborhood and occasionally one disappears. I strongly suspect
raccoons or foxes. I can't imagine letting a cat roam free but I
guess it's the same mindset that says you shouldn't spay a cat until
she's had at least one litter otherwise you are interfering with her
"nature". Ugh.

It's mostly that I've never met an indoor cat who was happy
with the situation.

Coyotes, domestic dogs, some categories of humans will all attack
outdoor domestic cats. Foxes probably would, but not racoons so far
as I am aware. Small cats are also subject to predation by raptors.

I'm confident that our two, indoor-outdoor, adopted strays
have lived a lot longer than they would have if we had
never adopted them (they were born in 1999, adopted in
2000-2001). I personally think it's impractical to try to
bring in all the outdoor cats, but I know animal rescuers who
attempt this (including one who keeps between 50 and 150 indoor cats
at any given time). There simply aren't enough adoptors
who want indoor-only cats to bring them all indoors.

Yes indeed. Archaic, thoroughly stupid, and really harmful.

It's not an inside joke. There's no joke about it. Ranger's simply
being a cautious father in identifying his children. That you don't
like the names he's been using for years is probably going to cause him
sleepless nights for weeks. You should hear how he refers to his wife.

I know hundreds of people who have happy, healthy housecats. So WTF are you
talking about?

Almost nobody I know keeps a cat trapped indoors, and the handful
that I do, the cat is always trying to escape.

In one case, the cat did escape and tried to climb a fence after
a bird. Unfortunately the cat forgot that in addition to being
trapped indoors, it had also been declawed, so it couldn't make
it up the fence, fell, and broke its pelvis. Fortunately it
was treated and survived.

(This is a cat I had lived with, several years previously, when
it was a perfectly happy indoor/outdoor cat.)

I'm curious about this "hundreds of people" you know with indoor
only cats... you must be connected with some slice of humanity
that I have nothing to do with. Such as cat breeders. That's
my first guess.

The only reason you'd go back was because someone else paid for the
meal and Chris Bianco smiled at you... ;P~~

Avoiding that place should be a Phoenix requirement.

Thanks to you and Gloria.

"Larry's" not interested in an explanation. It's pretty close to the
same bleating whine another regular posts.

Yes; really.

It does; Alpha was first to join the world with Beta being second 20
minutes and three contractions later.

We have several cats, all indoors. Not only are they not interested in
"escaping", they are afraid of the ourdoors. Kept indoors from the time
if is a kitten, cats don't know the difference...

and are perfectly happy living indoors.

And they live longer.
