sorrel -- how toxic?

I bought a large bunch of sorrel the other day, and put it
into a vegetable broth to be served with soba. It tastes great --
wonderful green sour/bitter flavor -- but I wonder how lightly
I should tread. The stuff is mildly toxic isn't it? What's
the recommended dosage??

I doubt you'll eat enough to kill you.

I didn't know it was toxic -- as a kid, we used to eat lots of
it (t'was growing in the woods near school and we girls were
crazy for it). I don't recall any ill effects, so I'm also
curious about the answer to this one...

Here's Mrs Grieves's take on sorrel:
http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/s/sorcom64.html

Don't think it's toxic in the quantities normally consumed. Like many
plants it will absorb heavy metals from the soil, which could make it
toxic.

So much that an ordinary person would never have trouble with it. It's
been used as food for many years, though not entirely without adverse
effects.

It has a fairly high oxalic acid content, so it impairs the effect of
calcium and iron supplements, and it may be troublesome for people who
are prone to kidney stones. It is also high in tannins, which are
toxic in large quantities.

There is one death from overconsumption of sorrel reported in the
medical literatu Farre, M., et al., Fatal oxalic acid poisoning
from sorrel soup. Lancet, 1989. 2: p. 1527
