The Greek Fest is F - U - N...went a few years ago when I was visiting.
There is also the Veiled Prophet thing and the Soulard Mardi Gras. The
Mardi Gras was always pretty fun (this was about ten or so years ago), but
then apparently things started to get a bit out of hand (rowdiness - wise)
I still have some beads from the times I attended....

The Halsted Street Fair is this weekend in Chicago. It's always a big deal,
the nabe is packed (about a half mil usually show up for it, Halsted St. is
closed from Belmont to Addison). It's the closest Chicawgo gets to a NOLA
party vibe....

I remember the Veiled Prophet but not the Soulard Mardi Gras. I can't
imagine it getting any more out of hand than it does in NOLA.

I only lived in Chicago brief, during a Fall and Winter. I heard of the
Halsted Street Fair, but was never there for it.

All sounds like fun. Your Oktoberfest is much different than any I've
been too, then, where only German food and beer are served. They have
brats, schnitzel, sauerbraten,potato pancakes, strudel, etc. Greek
festivals were generally held only at the Greek orthodox churches, but
are usually wonderful. We also had an Italian festival in Little Italy
that had a long-standing history.

Thai, and Mexican for good measure...lotsa beer, had a coupla Pilsner
Urquells (in a cup) for $5.00 each :-]

Lotsa cute *** guys..it's a big draw for them. I went to the soopermart
down the street this morning and there are scads of burned - out queens
walking around...hope they've got Monday off, lol ;-) For some reason it
also attracts a lot of old hippie types...who aren't so dumb it seems when
it comes to selling tie - dye and such at their crafts booths, the younger
kids are buying that stuff like hotcakes. Those cheap headshop $5.00 Indian
bedspreads that were a staple of dorm life 30 - odd years ago? Well, they
are selling for $20.00 - $30.00 these daze....

A few years back a bunch of St. Louis guys used to come up for the event and
stay at my place...picture 6 or so of us in a one - bedroom apt. coming and
going. Everyone's scattered now, so it's a bit less hectic 8->

Went yesterday evening to see a friend's band play...it was SO crowded...I'm
getting to the age where I don't like crowd scenes anymore. And what is it
with people bringing their babies and small kids in strollers to such
events? The kids can't really enjoy such a mob scene and besides which some
crunchy granola lesbo couple RAMMED me from behind with their friggin'
stroller and caused me to spill my new and full beer. There was plenty of
room for them where I was standing to manouver around, but no....

I saw some yuppie types trying to bring their dogs in to the event...dawgs
are NOT admitted, but these cretins insisted on trying to argue with the
entrance folks about the subject. I mean it's the LAST place I'd bring a
kid, let alone a pet...could ya...????

As to yer comments above on the mess of the Veiled Prophet Fair, yeah, that
was my impression...too many drunk hoosiers (for those of you outside of St.
Louis, "hoosier" is a local term used to describe hillbillies and white
trash types...). Some thought it was cute to be feeding their babies or
dogs beer in the 100 degree heat....

We get similar behaviour here at the annual July 4th week Taste Of Chicago.
It's become such a pigsty I haven't been for years (also the mediocre food
is VASTLY overpriced)....

Maybe I'm getting old and cranky, but if folks just used a *little* more
consideration in crowded circumstances life would be a bit more enjoyable
for all....

I left Chicago in 1980, and worked at Halsted and Addison st.
That was not the best of neighborhoods at that time. I am don't know
of the Street Fair. Would you know when the Fair started?
