How far up must one go from high school to adult?
blacksalt

Dismayed and disturbed, recently, with a 19 year old who'd gone to a
private high school yet DIDN'T know who Yassar Arafat was.

An assortment of homemade protein bars. Maybe some granola bars too. Mix it up
- some with dried fruit/nuts - some with chocolate morsels/nuts. Wrap up
individually. Bags of trail mix would be good. You can go to a local bulk foods
store and create your own mixes for a lot less than the pre-packaged stuff.

How substantial/healthy a snack?

Make your own gorp. Cheerios, peanuts, M&M's or chocolate chips.
Mix it all together and pour into baggies.

PBJ sandwiches

1/2 tortillas wrapped around string cheese sticks

Pita chips

Crackers

Cookies or brownies

You need to provide more information? How much per kid do you want to
spend? Will you have cooking facilities to prepare these snacks? What
about refrigeration? What time of day will the snacks be served?

don't bother cooking anything. Buy lots of popsickles, freeze them
really hard, take them in the ice chest(s).

I'm a marching band mom graduate this year!

I'd go with things like

PB&J on white bread
Apples
Bananas
Rice Krispy squares
Trail mix (Gorp)
Snack crackers (Cheeze-it's, et al)
Nutrigrain Bars
Soft Granola Bars with choc chips
Assorted Juiceboxes (ie; Capri Sun)
(get enough for 2 per student)

And also bring a _huge_ jug of ice water with a thinly sliced lemon in
it. I just recently bought at Target a collapsible 5 gallon water jug
for $5.00. They also had the same style in 1 gallon size. Along with
that bring some disposable cups.

For the things like crackers & trail mixes, you can get a family size
box & make individual ziplock baggies of them.

Then I'd advise going for the salty snacks. After marching around all
day, our band was usually thirsty and in need of salt replacement. So
how about bags of chips or pretzels? By high school the peanut
allergy kids know enough to check ingredients.

When I was into archery, somebody always brought a drink for the hot days.
Root beer was frowned upon -- it tended to make one hungry. Ginger ale was the
approved beverage.

Would gingerbread have the same good effects as ginger ale?

If it is for lunch, I would make some wraps using large tortillas, and
cut them in half for one serving - add chips, etc. if it isn't for
lunch, I'd serve a veggie, cheese and fruit tray with assorted
crackers, chips and cookies.

I made granola last night and brought it to work to share.

Oatmeal, flax, sesame seeds, wheat germ, almonds, dried cranberries,
figs, dark and light raisins, honey and oil. Bake at 350 until
beginning to brown (about 45 minutes).

I think a kids' version could include M&Ms and little marshmallows and
those yogurt dried fruit things and coconut and peanuts or something.
Maybe serve in the snowcone cups for fun and let them eat by hand.

Maybe you should ask about food allergies with all that potential.

Karen
