Don't you ever look at content beyond the subject? Wayne -- Take a deep breath, and relax. You cast your bread/question upon the waters of Usenet, an inherently anarchic place, and all you can do thereafter is observe, with whatever degree of bemusement you like, what happens. In fact, your question got (a) a number of specific answers (of preference for Kraft and/or Tillamook and (b) a lot of other stuff about cheddars or cheddar-like cheeses that was clearly of interest to some of the group. If you were frustrated by the "digressions" from what _you_ wanted, you could have been gracious about it, and said something like: "Hey, this is all very interesting [say this, even if you don't find it interesting -- why offend everyone in sight by scolding them?], but I'd like some more responses that dealt with my specific question [and you might give a better context why you so radically restrict the context of cheese buying -- are you _really_ limited to only these two heavily commericalized "brands"? Poor you, if so.] > If you > couldn't offer anything relative, why offer anything at all? You do not control what other people think relevant (not "relative") to a brief, decontextualized question about "commerical cheddar." Other people's reactions are _not_ in your control, and should not be. If your question didn't elicit what _you_ wanted, perhaps you phrased it poorly, or in any case you could try to clarify what you want without blaming other people for being interested in other things than _your_ immediate interest. > I didn't > ask, "What's your favorite cheese?" You just asked "Kraft or Tillamook?" -- and most of us think that a stupid choice at best, when there are so many _good_ cheddars available in a lot of places. By and large, this group is at its best when someone sees a question like yours and deliberately expands the scope to address other choices that might be a hell of a lot better than either one posed in the original "question." When the responses to your initial post go off in a different direction than you hoped for, it is just siily -- and very much counter-productive -- to scold people for doing what _they_ wanted instead of what _you_ wanted. Try _enticing_ them to look at your intended question, instead of blaming them for finding something else more interesting. <Foghorn Leghorn voice> Flys and honey, boy; flys and honey, not vinegar, boy! </Foghorn Leghorn voice> |

I completely agree with you, and I will try to bear all of that in mind in the future. No excuses, but it had been a less than ideal day at work yesterday, and I think I just got off on the wrong foot. Today wasn't much better. I think things just snowballed. I appreciate your remarks... Best regards, Wayne |

Cabot Cheese (Was Commercial Cheddars)
Down here in SoCal we discovered the Cabot white cheddar at Trader
Joe's. Great cheese. Not so fond of a couple of their other offerings. We also buy Tillamook, since my wife is from that general area, and she believes it's the only civilized cheese. She found the Cabot, though, and allows as how it's quite good. We really like it with our favorite Reisling. jmac |

Thought I'd give it a try, see what the Aussies are calling cheddar. Unfortunately, it's not extra sharp. Not even sharp. More like mild. That's the second cheddar I've come across mis-labeled "extra sharp" (the other not at TJ's) in the last couple months. Is this some kinda new pricing scam for cheddar or just a rash of really stupid store clerks (both were rewrapped and price/labeled)? nb |

The other week I had to tell the very nice young man checking out my groceries that the things he was holding and puzzling over were.... limes. No sure what he thought they were! I've nearly gotten some very good bargains from check out clerks with inadequate knowledge of the fresh produce the supermarket stocked - however, silly me though I'd better tell the girl at the checkout that that was a guava, not an apple, and cost about three times as much <g>. -- Rhonda Anderson Penrith, NSW, Australia |
