Seems to me they missed the most obvious difference in behavior
between the two groups. Namely, that the skinnier group stopped
eating sooner. And somehow I doubt that the ayce buffet has to be
Chinese .... -aem

What strikes me as weird while watching people at our nearest
cheap-and-cheerful Chinese buffet is seeing plates piled high with food.
Then much of that food left on the plate while the diner goes to get
more. Given that there is no limit on the number of times one can visit
the serving station, why take more food than is wanted?

On my first visit to any new/unknown buffet, a reccy is done first to
see what's what. Then a small spoon of a few likely items goes on the
plate. Having tasted, the next round is done the same way with other
items. Repeat ad infinitum.

In our 'local', the best items are the soup, peel-and-eat shrimp,
previously-frozen NS mussels in black bean sauce and some of the
vegetarian items (tofu eg) plus steamed 'peach' buns filled with red
bean paste. They are unimaginative but reliable.

One of the worst buffet (or any sort of) meals was at a local place
(Hometown Buffet), which is very popular. There were items that were
utterly unidentifiable, even after finishing the portion! Never again.

and eating slower..It takes a few minutes for the "appet-stat" (sp?)
to kick in.
you can take your time, the buffet will still be there.
I like to start with the sea weed.
