Sorry I did not have this site before. I went and found it filled
mostly with processed box stuff, unknown brands of veggies, and lots
of strange stuff like 1lb packets of Cabala’s outdoor store sausage
spice mixes for 50 cents a bag (summer sausage. jerky, etc.). They
did have good prices on organic beef and pork but you had to get on a
list for the next go round. A very strange thing was a type of chip
type snack called the ": Lemon Lift" which is advertised on the bag as
"infused with caffeine” tasted real bad. Oh well, now I can say I
went.

When I was a kid back in the late 50's and early 60's, there was a "salvage"
grocery store in Brentwood, Long Island.

You never knew what they were going to have in stock and the merchandise was
displayed moslty in case lots with a few boxes cut open. All boxed and
canned goods. No shopping carts but the guys working there would cary your
cases to the front register as you shopped. You paid in cash only, your
purchases were totalled up using a crayon on the side of a brown paper bag
and the guys who worked there were very easy about giving people extra stuff
for free.

Not for nothing... but all the guys who worked there could have come from
central casting for the Soprano's. That area of Long Island was heavily
populated with Italians moving out of New York city. Common wisdom of the
time was that most of the stuff they were selling "fell off the back of a
truck" in New York and it wasn't unusual to find them selling government
surplus food.

My Mom had 4 boys to feed and she loved the place.
