Default Rome - day 2

We went to the Coliseum (a short walk from the hotel) and surrounding
ruins. Pictures much better than mine are easily googled.

This is the coolest thing about Italy. So much is so old, people take most
of it for granted. I remember passing a courtyard entrance in the old
section of florence one afternoon, as a young business woman was entering to
go up to her apartment. Her stylish 4-inch heels clicked across a mosaic
floor that had to have been done in the 1400s.

The fact that they preserve it and gate it off is an indication that they do
NOT take it for granted.

I'm sure you're having a great time and eating well. The pictures sure look
good. Most days in Italy, one of our meals was bread, cheese, salami, and
wine. Try to find the off the path stores and you get a great selection of
wines for a little as 3 Euro a bottle.

What did you think of the Coliseum? Awe inspiring just standing in there.

Looks like something Agador should have served in the botched up meal
in the movie The Birdcage.

I would say it was well thought out. Seems it even cums in different
sizes. I assume it's to be served with a meat gravy.

Anybody in Massachusetts seen/been to the Peni's Market North of
Boston? I just laughed and laughed when I first saw the sign. I
forget what town but it was near the shore.

More pictures! YAY! I'd like to share a tidbit from my Italian
adventure in the early 90s. So I'm ambling around town and I see this
sign "Senso Unico". I see it again a little bit later and then
several times again here and there...and I think to myself "man Senso
Unico is one long zig zaggy street..." I can't find in on the maps
(map geek) but soon after figure it out. :-)

I got this real neat book in Rome that showed the Coliseum in its day
and had overlays of it through the ages. It was a tourist thing, but
it's cool.

The only expensive thing I bought in Rome was a rosary from the Vatican
gift shop for the mother of a dear friend. Though I never met the woman,
she prayed her rosary for me when I was so sick 3 years ago and I
thought it would be such a nice thing to get her a rosery from the
Vatican. It was supposedly blessed, too. Whatever that means.

Rose, the lady I bought the rosary for, is thrilled with it. I'm
thrilled to have made such a kind person so happy.

Oh, yeah? Well you ought to see the cheese and salumi case at OUR
market! It's positively craptacular. Well, it would be if our market
had a salumi case.

Actually, they were in a sidewalk display next to the bicycle shaped
pasta. I sent that picture for rfc entertainment value.

That *is* cool! I was thinking of buying one of those "old Rome"
poster/maps for my grandson. If I can find a book like that, I'll get
it! Thanks.

Thanks, Ed! We have lots of those streets in this area, but I didn't
even think of going into a wine shop.... mainly because I didn't want
to lug a bottle of wine with me for who knows how long. I will
definitely do it soon though.

It's really something! The ruins "across the street" are just as
fascinating and much less crowded. I supposed saw Circus Maximus... I
looked, but didn't see.
