If I liked venison...

Today would've been my lucky day!

Missed one fawn on the road to riches (Powerball) into town by 10 feet and
100 yards later I nearly brushed another on the butt as it crossed the road
by maybe 3 feet. No harm done.

Could've been my lucky day if I was more lead-footed than usual around my
back roads.

It can be an expensive way to get venison unless you're driving
something like a tank. OTOH, fresh venision is rather good. Just
don't hit it too hard.

It can indeed be an expensive way to get free meat. There was one that
was hit in front of our neighbour's house a few years ago and it really
did a number on the front end of a full size Buick. I know several
people who have totalled cars hitting deer, one of them twice. Another
friend was lucky not to have completely demolished his car when he hit
one, but he ended up with some nasty injuries when the deer came through
the windshield and hit him in the face breaking several of his teeth.

One of the reasons I don't ride my motorcycle much at night is my
concern about the local deer population jumping out in front of me. A
friend of my brother's hit one one night.

I've found it's much better to have someone else hit them and just
enjoy the meat.
I've come close to hitting one while riding my bicycle a couple of
times.

Roadkill deer can be deadly. If the rumen is ruptured by a car crash,
digestive bacteria can circulate throughout the bloodstream until the
heart stops, contaminating the meat. If you hit the deer yourself,
and determine that it was killed upon impact, that's a different
story. States differ on if you can keep the deer, and how to go about
it. IMO, the best thing to hit a deer with is an arrow fired from a
compound bow.

When I was working there was a guy from the OPP who used to come to our
scale house and bring coffee. He used to pick up the fresh killed deer
on the highway and take them home. When I worked on a road crew on that
same stretch of highway we used to find dead deer daily.

I have had some close calls in my car. One morning I left the house
around 5:30 am, turned onto the road, closed my eyes as I yawned and
opened them in time to see the hind end of a deer leaping over the hood
of my car. I was barely moving at the time.

There used to be a law where if you came upon road kill and wanted to take
it, you had to call the PA game commission for permission. They'd come out
and make a spot determination, yay or nay and if yay, it was yours. I never
saw it with my own eyes, just over the radio scanner. I don't know if it
still works that way. Haven't heard a request like that in 10 years or
more.

Today's near collision fawns were only 3-feet +/- tall and skinny. They
could've done some damage to my auto but not compared to the big bucks
strutting around my property.

I'm sure the does were right behind the fawns. Seems the bucks send them
out in the open first, knowing the tenancies of hunters.
