Default Had dinner at Outback Steakhouse

We haven't been there in a really long time, decided to head over there
after attending the county fair. Shared a blooming onion and I ordered
a roasted beef filet with port sauce and mushrooms. Now that I think
about it, I don't remember seeing any mushrooms.

It came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. However, when it arrived,
there were the (very good) mashed potatoes and a good size portion
of haricots vert.

Holy crow, I don't know what was up with them, but they were fabulous.
I wish I finished them. Darned tasty they were.

Don't tell anyone, I gave up trying to eat them with a fork and took to
using my fingers. Hey ... if it's okay for asparagus, it's good enough
for the green beans. I'm sticking with that story, you're supposed to
eat them with your fingers.

Believe it or not, I've never been to one. I just noticed yesterday
there's one is located less than 10 miles from me. When did that one
pop up? I'll get to it one of these days and see what all the hooha
is about.

I really don't know if you'll like it. They have a nice rack of lamb, if
you
like that.

Anyway, the place was hopping! People were piled up waiting for a
table. What recession? Yikes.

Do you know whether they serve Australian beef or U.S. beef?
There's never been a case of Mad Cow Disease in Australia.
That would be a good reason to go there. I haven't had any
beef in about a year, and I'd really like some.

Heh, Heh! Good, yes? Fingers were invented before forks.

SWMBO and I grill various things like asparagus and fresh
green beans, on iron, and do the same. Delish.

Bout the OS. Been to our local, wasn't much. Steaks were
poor, service indifferent. More ambience than substance.

Onion was nice, but greasy. Must be a local thing....

Roasted beef filet? Was it EYE filet? Because Peter Lucas -- that
self-appointed spokesperson for Aussie cuisine -- believes that if it isn't
eye filet it might as well be a plank of oak. And if you paid more than a
dollar fifty, he'll tell you that he could have gotten it cheaper.

Petey is a plank of oak. Australian oak, you bet, the best in the
world and incredibly superior to the American oak, which he can
buy for pennies on the (US) dollar.

I'm pretty sure you're out of luck there. I don't think there's anything
that's actually Australian there.

I struggled with those huge forks they give you and those skinny
beans. Fingers good!

Sometimes it's better than other times, and for what it is, I like it
better than in other places that serve it. In no way is it good for
you. It's not really my thing, but I had some of it.

Outback is a con job. They brand their grill marks. Spend your money at a
real steak house like Mortons!!!

I had the best prime rib I think I've ever had at the Outback near
Chattanooga TN in that big gross shopping mall. Of course the fact
that a kayaking buddy of mine and I just ran the Upper Ocoee for our
first solo times may have played into it too!

If I was in a booth, I really wouldn't care. We sat at the bar, though,
and this woman came in and sat rightnexttome. I had a hard time
cutting my steak, then I was picking my beans off my plate with my
fingers. Sorry, lady. My manners suck tonight.

We have a Mortons 1/2 a block from Union Square. I almost keel over
from the delicious smells wafting around when I pass by!
Unfortunately, I never think of it when we plan to go out. I remember
the original one in Chicago and although I read about Mortons in rfc
many times in the past, I didn't realize it was a chain until I saw
the downtown location.

I've been in an OS once, but not being a beef lover, I found little
else to choose from. I think there was one shrimp dish on the menu
and maybe one chicken. I went with a group, no knowing what to
expect.

I hear that blooming onion is a cardiologist's nightmare, no?

I thought there were a number of chicken and shrimp dishes, but
I really didn't pay attention as I was looking for steak. Looked up
the menu, they have a variety of foods, but maybe all menus are not the
same. I had to put in my zip to find the menu for the place I visited.

> I hear that blooming onion is a cardiologist's nightmare, no?

Aside from being an onion, this is not health food. Each one is plenty
for at least 4 people. I think anyone eating one by themselves would
be a Bad Idea. Heh. It's like anything else, too much is too much.

Oh live a little... millions of people (and thousands of them RIGHT
WHERE YOU LIVE) eat beef every day and don't get sick from it. Go
ahead, take chance,.... go for it.

I order it rare.

No more so than a good order of thick cut Onion Rings. ;-)

Frankly, a regular diet of them might be a problem.
I go to Outback maybe once or twice per year on average, but lately I've
not been there for about 3 years as I'm on a budget of both money and
calories. <g>

I think one once in awhile is NOT going to kill you!

Friends, the ex and I used to invade the Beverly Hills Mortons. The steaks
were served floating in a pool of melted butter. Delicious every possible

If you are using "best" to mean most appealing, then you are correct.

If you are using "best" to mean most effective, you are not.

I'll second that. And, I think that's what a lot of others found here
in Ontario, Canada. All nine of the Outback Steakhouse locations in
Ontario were closed back in March 2009. Their website says 'The
decision to exit Ontario was a difficult one, and it was made only
after considerable reflection and analysis.'
Translation: Our customer base fell off to the point where we weren't
making a profit.

I used to enjoy Outback for their rack of lamb, but in the past few
years their corporate recipes are way, way too salty. The last time we
ate at one we were gagging on the food.

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.

I will definitely order a rack of lamb. Hopefully, it's "American"
and local would be even better. We'll probably order one beef and one
lamb the first time we go. No sense in ordering fish at a red meat
restaurant... especially the first time.

I hope the chef there is as good as ours is. :-)
That is the one problem with chain restaurants. They may have
"standardized" recipes, but they are still only going to be as good as
the local chef.

I've met ours in person, and he's really cool.

Cheers!

i like the blooming onion and i think they do a good job on the steaks.
the salads aren't much. it's pretty good value for the money.
