Yes, just peel off the first layer of good onion and wash well.

Happens all the time with ours because we bring back 50 lb of sweet onions
coming home from Texas and store them for almost 6 months. They last pretty
well. BTW, best way to store that many is to put them in stockings or panty
hose with a knot between each and hang in cool dark place. Unfortunately I
have a dark place but it aint so cool in the summer.
