Just noticed this myself: v3.0.9 (4/21/2009).

Use Firefox's Help menu item "Check for updates" for easy installation.

I don't know if Firefox will auto-update as a settings option. I never auto-
update anything.

Om,

If I knew how often or if it could be scheduled, I'd let it auto update in
that fashion.

Comcast gives away a free McAfee security suite. Only problem was that it
tried to access the internet (according to zonealarms) so often, it seemed
like more of a virus in itself. I uninstalled it a day or so later

I don't run virus protection software. Haven't in probably 10 years.

Best,

Andy

If you go into the options section there is a place where you can check
boxes for updates. My FF doesn't update automatically, but it does get a
popup that tells me an update is available and I can download it from
the popup

Om,

I take other trusted/proven measures that negate the need to run virus
software. Virus software is a clock-cycle hog, imho.

Janet,

I see the option in the Options--->Advanced tab but that doesn't tell me
how often Firefox is checking for updates. That's where I find fault with
auto-updating. It steals clock-cycles.

Suppose it checks for updates every second?? I'd like to know, is all. So I
don't auto-update, period!

You get the idea.

Om,

Uhm... clock-cycles are related to CPU speed, not the amount of RAM. RAM
speed, bus speed and cache speeds are other bottlenecks.

You mean I misunderstood the fact that you mentioned an outdated

I skipped my senior year of High School completely (and graduated).
I came from one of those religious communes in Pittsburgh where
teaching standards far exceed those of the general public schools.
But I wasn't 18 years old yet so I had to go to school and do menial
duties as teacher's aides and smoke a lot of pot to pass the time
for my last year of HS. They let me work at a supermarket for half
the school day as well.

I'm sure most folks won't care, but Internet Explorer 8 was also recently

Wayne,

I'm the opposite, in that. IE has always been a corporate kludge browser
tied to their OS that I felt that it didn't look after my browsing interest
from a security standpoint.

When I can't delete IE from my PC... it's not in my best interest to use
it!

Firefox is a freely supported browser with no interest in Microsoft's
adjoining OS.

Imho,

Best,

I am on a private Yahoo! computer group and so far there have been a
half-dozen postings about how IE 8 has messed up people's machines and
none about how people like it.

I know your work place uses IE, but I'd be so afraid of downloading
anything new Microsoft puts out on my own machine. When Microsoft learns
to release software *after* they have worked out the bugs, I'll trust
them more. JMTCW

Huh! I use both - well, *I* use FF and hubby uses IE. It's a nice
way to keep our bookmarks separate w/o using different desktops. For
me, FF has "automatic update". It notifies me of an update and I
click on download. I checked my version of IE just now and it's not
v8, so obviously I have to search for IE updates.

A friend who actually uses a paid version of some anti-virus (etc)
program says that IE changes your registry on a regular basis too.
That's not a good thing. Every time I have Ad Aware search, it has to
delete IE cookies even though IE is set to delete them at the end of
each session. FF is never on the radar screen and it's used more.

My Microsoft updates are automatic, although I have it set to prompt me

My Windows updates are set to show me what's available. I can choose
which ones to download and install. I always get the security patches
and the "malicious software" remover. I think I did update the media
player, but I've opted to not load SP3 and IE8. I have all the security
stuff from SP3 already there and the other stuff it comes with doesn't
really do anything for me.
