"Chopped" is the one which set me off, with their screwing around and NOT stocking the pantry with staple items like eggs. "Top Chef" can be similar, throwing the chefs into some weird environment and then criticizing them for not being complete experts in the cuisine of (for example) fourteenth-century Pskov. It introduces what I consider to be a completely unacceptable element of luck. I foresee an episode of "Top Chef Masters" which goes something like this: "You have this pile of shredded sausage casings, a three-ounce bag of Cheez-It crackers, and four quarts of vintage-1951 water from the Love Canal. You have fifteen seconds to make a twenty-course meal for five hundred of the most discerning diners in the world. GO!" Bob |
