Anyone using Mastercook 9 with Vista?
 

I got Mastercook 9 and installed it the other day. The import bar is
available in the Explorer bar options on IE7, but it loads with an
error. I can't seem to get it to work, and it's really the only reason
i want Mastercook at all! Sooo frustrating. Any tips?

I'm not running MC 9 or Vista but that Yahoo! group has all the answers
for people who do use them. The fix, IIRC, has something to do with
bypassing the administrator thingie on Vista.

The name of the group is MastercookDiscussion on Yahoo! Groups.
I've subscribed for several years, mostly as a lurker and have gotten
some excellent assistance and knowledge from it. The files are wonderful.

I started out with a very early version of Master Cook for Windows 95
that was on floppies. I created my own cookbook and transferred many
favorite recipes to it before we sold the house and moved into the RV.
(A couple of floppies was a heck of a lot lighter to schlepp around
North America than my many, many cookbooks.)

I'm on version 7 now, which is my third version. V.8 has problems and
V.9 fixes the bugs, but the only thing V.9 has is that button for use on
IE and I almost never use IE, so I never bothered to upgrade.

There is a free add-on for Firefox that does the same thing. It's called
Recipe Fox and it works pretty well. I think you may need a Source Forge
account to get it. Email me if you are interested and I'll pass along
the URL.

Would I need to have a program like Master Cook or can I do what I've
always done and paste the recipe it grabs into a Word Doc?

May want to check out MealMaster perhaps? Google for it. It's freeware.
Huge archives of downloadable recipes or can import from saved ascii txt or
can type in your own favorites. Nice search features. May or may not work
with Vista (not sure).

I guess you could paste any recipe on the net. I know that they have
made Recipe Fox work with Living Cook Book now.

If the site is not compatible with Recipe Fox, I will usually go to the
"print" screen if one is offered and copy it there. Master Cook has a
built-in tool called "import assistant" that lest you paste the recipe
there then it is easy to transfer it to the cook book format.

If you are thinking of getting Master Cook, *do not* download it. The
discussion site has warnings all over about the dowloaded version having
major problems.

My copy of MealMaster is so old it's on a floppy <g> I don't think it
works with XP so it might not work with Vista, either.

Honestly, I'm not interested in recipe software even if it's free. I

I'm having trouble imagining how this works. How is it easier than
copy/paste special? If cookbook format means it has all the added
garbage I see on recipes pasted here from Master Cook, no thanks. I
want simple, stripped down recipes in real cookbook form.

The whole idea behind Recipe Fox is to just click on a recipe in a
supported site (there are many of them and more being added all the
time)with a "grab it" button. That button formats the recipe for MC then
you export it. When you hit the "export" icon, Master Cook launches and
you are asked to which cook book you want to export. Then it tells you
that the export has been successful.

I bring up the recipe and check it for problems (which there rarely are)
and then categorize it. See if this site is helpful:

It's really sweet but if you have your own system using a word
processing program, it will not help you. 'Copy and paste' is your friend.

Yeah, I have a file folder system set up and it works for me. I
sometimes have to reformat recipes, so I was wondering if RecipeFox
would work for my needs. I guess not.

It works fine with XP (what I am on). Just not sure of later WIN versions.

You went to mealmaster.com. That site sells Cookbook Wizard and you
can try free for 30 days.

Nope, go to the web page. It used to be 30 days, now it's a free
registration from the authors who still have it available for download.

You might try the following:

Right Click on the Mastercook Icon on your desktop.
Left click on Properties.
Click on the compatibility Tab
There is a box
[ ] Run this program in compatibility more.
Click on that box and try an earlier version of Windows.

You can always switch back.

I run some Windows 98 utilities on Vista in this manner.

Windows 95 Toshiba laptop <g> I did check to see if I still had the
floppy as I have a floppy drive and could copy it for you, but, alas, I
don't have it any longer. I thought it was pretty obsolete.
