2500mg shouldn't be too hard. You just have to whack off the high
sodium stuff (or severely restrict it).

When I was a kid we got a water softener. My father ran one pipe to the
bathroom cold water tap that bypassed the water softener. My mother
would only get her drinking water and the cooking water from that tap.
