Nucularized Eggbeaters (+ 1 tablespoon fat-free milk [add 30 seconds cooking
time]) peppered to death, a slice of cheddar cheese and two slices of
nucularized bacon on a whole grain whole wheat roll with a tall glass of ice
cold fat-free milk.

Found a traveling mousetrap in front of the fridge when I walked into the
kitchen. poor mouse got it across the belly and refused to die. I took him
outside and put him out of his misery with a brick. He's happier now.

I poison rodents. The bleed to death peacefully (altho' a bit thirsty)
with Dicoumaral baits. I HAVE used snap traps but don't like them much
for the very reason you just posted.

Glue traps are an abomination and I'd like to see them outlawed.

stinking up the place.

Repeater traps are good for mice. There is no suffering there as they
are live traps.

How you dispose of them is up to you.

No way am I going to live trap rats around here!

If you choose to do that, take them at least a mile away.

Oh ick (re the mouse).

No going out for us, because we have more snow, which will later
ice up. (The only outing I will get will be to shovel up as much
snow as possible, so the ice is less thick.)

I just had egg, pastrami (forgot I had that) and cheese in a
low-carb pita pocket. Cafe au lait (x2), of course.

Plus cats like to leave "presents" of partial rodent bits and parts for
you to step in. Bird bits too.

I do, however, have cats. But no rodents indoors to date! The norway
rat issue is all outdoors but they've cost me thousands in outdoor
property damage over the past 21 years. :-( I just paid 6K to have a 36"
limestone skirting put up around the house to keep the damned things out
of the outdoor walls. It's ok tho' as it improved noise insulation and
property value.

My cats don't go outside. Two of the three dogs kill rats, but not
enough. The dogs don't eat their kills so poisoning the rats is safe for
my pets.

I have not had a snap trap failure. I have had a mouse,
apparently poisoned by neighbors, dying a slow death in my garage.
It was not a pleasant sight.

Read Andy's post about the traveling moustrap. Sometimes it catches them
across the middle of the back, breaks their back and they die a slow
death.

I'm ok with snap traps, it's just not enough for the problems I've had
with the rats outside. There are too many of them in this area.

I poison out the batch living here and more move in from the surrounding
neighborhood no matter how "clean" I keep my property.

I put out pellets mixed with peanut butter to get them to consume it
faster 2 to 4 times per year in dog proofed bait stations. The peanut
butter cuts down on the number of days I have to do morning carcass
patrol as they eat it a LOT faster. I have 1/4 acre.

I've been fighting the MF-ers for 21 years. Poison is the only way to
keep them reasonably under control.

If my neighbors would do the same, we might be able to eradicate them.

I wonder what kind of poison they used?
The Coumadin baits I use, I have found still live, dying rats. They are
just very weak and tired. No convulsions or anything.

I put them out of their misery when I find them that way.

They frequently are found dead or dying near the dogs water dishes.
Bleeding makes you thirsty.

Usually the border collie or the lab chow take care of that chore for me.

Sorry, but I've learned to hate rats over the last 21 years. Like I said
in a previous post, they have cost me literally thousands in property
damage.

They chew and burrow.

I prefer snap traps. That way they don't crawl into a wall or some
other hard to get at place to die and stink up the place for another 2
weeks.

around and they kept the rodent population under control. Coyotes
kept the feel cat population under control.

I don't have rodents in the house, fortunately, but was getting close.

Hence the 6K rock wall.

I cashed in emergency funds (investment capital) to take care of it. I
did not wish to go any deeper into credit debt nor refinance.

I've only 3 years left on this morgage!

I will have to pay income taxes on that 6k, but it was necessary.

The rock skirt will help. I want to rock the entire house over
eventually. Nothing more insulating than limestone and the contractor
thinks he can do the entire mess for maybe another 12K. The reinforced
footing, drilled into the original foundation, was done this go-round!
He set it up to support the weight of a full rock facing as I discussed
my long term plans with him.

freakin' rat issues with this neighborhood.

The first line of defense against rodents is exclusion. The
second line is cats. If both those fail, I use Havahart
humane traps. I've never had to resort to poison or killer
traps. Poison especially seems a bad idea as you might
inadvertanty poison a cat.

There was a mouse problem at the place we have church camp. It's out in
the woods, so I suspect they're mostly field mice. It's not rented out
during the winter, and there is no food stored there. A local woman who
keeps raptors was pretty insistent about recommending snap traps. The
poisoned mice are easy targets for the raptors, except then the poison
kills them also. Since the raptors are a good method of controlling
rodents, it's not a good idea to kill them.

If folks have pets in the neighborhood, this may not be a good thing.

I have to agree that glue traps sound a bit horrible but, given the
mouse's fast metabolism and heart beat, it probably dies very quickly
from thirst or starvation.

I have yet to meet a dog that eats dead rats. Not even my own will.
There are almost no loose cats around here. We live on a busy street so
loose cats don't live long. :-(

I go around and pick up rat carcasses.

There are too many to use traps on. I really have no choice! I've tried
snap and box traps. The rats reproduce too quickly.

I was hesitant to use poison at first too. By the time I finally did
start to use it, the first go-round, the carcass count slowed down at 46
rats I picked up in 2 weeks. They get out of hand rapidly.
