What's to sweat? I'm disabled and on SS. I'm structured in trusts, LLCs,
and other investments. I'm so structured, I qualify for Obama's freebies.
And I'm going to sign up for them, too.

Clinton left the US with annual surpluses that could have paid off the
National Debt. Under Bush, those surpluses evaporated - so the next
president has a lot of dirty work to do.

Election night will be pizza night for me too! I made the dough
tonight and my son will be the pizza chef tomorrow night. It's a
win-win situation.

So, you don't believe in government by the People? Government by
voter (the People) is called a DEMOCRACY.

I'm voting *against* prop 8 (because *I* can) and you're sounding like
a closet Palin republican.

The United States is unique because we are a "Democracy within a
Republic". We're a big country, so it makes sense.

the u.s. is a representative democracy. i would not be comfortable
putting, say, the first ten amendments to the constitution up to a popular
vote.

you vote for your representatives, who (theoretically) have more time to
study the issues, and yes, sometimes 'overrule' ill-considered popular
passions.

How many years have they been hiding it? I haven't found any definite
reference, but it appears that this is the first year it's been offered.
Perhaps it appeared "hidden" because it didn't exist?

It looks as if it will be pizza night for us as well. I was going to
cook, but I've come down with a nasty cold and the SO doesn't want me
serving up viruses. I'll probably stick to water, since I'd probably
zonk out before the Washington polls close if I had any alcohol.

Well, a representative two-party system is just one step up from a
one-party system ...
The constitution could be changed by public vote in Switzerland
or my country; however - more then 2/3rds of the voters had to agree.
Which is rather unlikely in countries with more than 2 political parties.

<snip>

Unique ?
That will come as a shock to many European countries which are
both republics and democracies. Although most with more than 2 parties.

I still like the Swiss and my countries model better.
Apart from the representatives, the people can vote directly on important
matters.

It's government by MONEY! Even decades later, most people, and not just
in California, think that prop 13 was a victory by the little people.
But those people got screwed. It was always about big business,
especially apartment house owners. Prop 13 is known as the Jarvis/Gann
Amendment, after Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann.

From:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Jarvis

"Jarvis was at the time employed by the Los Angeles Apartment Owners
Association as a lobbyist. In a fundraising letter to the landlords that
employed him, he claimed, "We are the biggest losers" if Prop. 13 fails.
(Not to mention: The Yes on 13 headquarters were located in a Los
Angeles Apartment Owners Association office.) He tried to persuade
renters to vote for Prop. 13 by saying it would drive down rents, by
decreasing the property taxes that landlords paid. Post-13 news reports
found rents weren't going down, despite Jarvis's promises - apparently
landlords were just pocketing their property tax savings."

> >the current prop 8 is another.

>
> I'm voting *against* prop 8 (because *I* can) and you're sounding like
> a closet Palin republican.

You do understand, of course, that if prop 8 fails today, that you'll
have to start teaching your students how to have *** sex. Starting
tomorrow. The State Ed Code mandates it. Everybody who's read the ads,
listened to the ads on the radio or watched the ads on tv knows this.
The LDS church alone has spent US$20,000,000 to make sure that we all
understand this, and that a failure of prop 8 is an infringement of
their right of religious freedom to force the rest of us to live our
personal lives according to their beliefs.

The following official state government URLs are taken from a full page
ad appearing on Nov 2, 2008 in my local newspaper (the Santa Rosa Press
Democrat):

http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/se/sexeducation.asp
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/se/faq.asp

Of course, I could find nothing to substantiate the claims, but I only
spent about 20 minutes looking.

Still, there are two leaps of logic (perhaps "faith" is a better word)
here. For one thing, the CA Ed Code is already there, and nothing
changes whether prop 8 passes or fails. Second of all, the CA Supreme
Court made *** marriage legal half a year ago. If prop 8 fails, nothing
happens. We're at status quo. There is no "trigger" if prop 8 fails
that changes what is taught in the schools. If it hasn't been taught
the last six months, under existing constitutional law and existing Ed
Code, what will cause it to be taught if prop 8 fails?

Allowing people to marry doesn't say anything about their having to have
sex. Ask 20 million husbands and 25 million wives.

We shall avert our eyes in a modest manner once the knot is tied.

Frankly, she's one of the more powerful VP candidates I've seen in many
years.

> What do election promises have to do with reality?

It's the stated plan of the candidate, what they intend to try for if
they are elected. I consider myself to be lower middle class. McCain
wants to take from the middle class and give to the rich. Obama wants
to take from the middle class and give to the poor.

The President of the US is the most powerful politician in the US, and
has probably the most influence over what happens. The collective power
of the legislature is much greater, but not nearly as focussed.

What do election promises have to do with reality?

There is a system of checks and balances. The president has less power
than we give him credit for.

Of course! I'm looking forward to a little party, even if it's on a
Tuesday night! I printed up pics of Sarah, Joe, John, and Barack, plus
the ding dongs fighting for the Goveror's seat here in WA, and I think
we'll throw darts at all of them- I'm an equal oppurtunity hostess!
Wish you could join us and not have to worry about a p test!

FYI, we already "have to" teach it. Do we? Guess.

If the new prez is a democrat, he might even bring it in a brown paper
bag instead of a gold plated lunchbox.

Not that it matters now. Should be interesting if she decides to run in
2012.

Only time will tell. It's kind of a moot point right now. Palin is out
of the picture for the next 4 years.

It was predictable.

<lol> I dunno, I've heard about his taste in food. :-)
It was pointed out on WOAI radio.

I expect her to recede to a sort of Ollie North status,
someone we can't ever shake, lurking there and commentating.

LOL that's silly. Why feel sorry? In every election people are
disappointed. Neither candidate was ever my choice, along with millions
of other people. That is the way the system works when only two
candidates are permitted.

typical winger bullshit. that story was completely debunked:

October 29, 2008
Q:

Did Michelle Obama spend $450 on room service?
I recently received an e-mail with a picture and quote of Michelle Obama
saying if universal health care is going to work, someone is going to have
to give up a piece of the pie so someone can have more. The e-mail went on
to say, "oh really," then it had a picture of a room service receipt from
the Waldorf-Astoria signed by Michelle Obama on 10/15/08 for 2 lobster
appetizers, 2 caviars, 2 lobsters & champagne for a total of $447.00. Is
this for real or did someone do some Photoshop?
A:

No. The claim is a total fabrication, and the sources that publicized it
have retracted the story.
This hoax e-mail, which purports to show a copy of Michelle Obama's
exorbitant room service receipt, reproduces a flyer that was posted on the
blog of a pro-Hillary Clinton political action committee, Puma PAC. The
flyer quotes Michelle Obama saying that "someone is going to have to give
up a piece of the pie" for the sake of universal health care and education.
It then pictures a receipt from the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City,
dated October 15, showing a total charge of $447.39 for lobster appetizers,
lobster, caviar (Iranian caviar, no less), champagne and room service
charges. The receipt is signed with the name Michelle Obama.

We certainly hope this is an Adobe Photoshop job, since the alternative
explanation is that someone ran up a $450 bill at the Waldorf-Astoria just
to perpetrate a cruel hoax. Or perhaps that someone stole Michelle Obama's
credit card. Or that there's someone else named Michelle Obama, someone
with expensive tastes. What's certainly true is that Michelle Obama, the
presidential candidate's wife, did not dine on lobster in New York on
October 15. She was more than 600 miles away giving a speech in Indiana.

The New York Post, which originally reported the fabricated story as true
on October 17, has retracted its article. Darragh Murphy, the director of
Puma PAC, has also retracted the flyer and apologized for perpetuating the
hoax.

-Jess Henig

Clarification: Michelle Obama was in New York on the evening of Oct. 15 to
attend the final presidential debate but did not stay in the
Waldorf-Astoria, according to the Obama campaign (and the New York Post
retraction). She left Indiana after her afternoon speech. The receipt is
dated 4:04 pm, at which time the campaign says Obama had not yet arrived in
New York.

she and fox news were made for each other. she's up for re-election as
governor in two years. if she gets beat (or maybe even before then), look
for her to dump the first dude and give up the mooseburgers for the high
life in some wingnut sinecure.
