My son cracks me up. During the presidential debates on TV, he and his
friends played some drinking game where every time x happened, they
popped off a shot. His face book page detailed one of the rules being if
the candidates used the first name of their opponent- a shot! Somehow I
suspect there were a few other events in the debate which would cause a
shot too... I mean geeez.. they're frat boys, huh?

Aside from that juvenile college drinking game, I thought it might be
fun to try my hand at making some homemade liquors other than
Limoncello. I've got that one down pretty well now (thanks to Chris
Dabney).
I once had a neighbor who would send over homemade Kahlua each
Christmas. That might be nice.

Does anyone have any favorite recipes for homemade libations?

try this, thanks!

Chilled, absolutely chilled in frosted glasses topped with sugar, if that
makes sense.

My son is also in college but he tells me about the drinking exploits of
his friends and neighbors. He is not a drinker. He isn't anti drinking,
I just think he decided to wait until he was 21. He is a bartender
though - go figure.

I have also wanted to try other liquors besides limoncello - as great as
that is....

I have made this kahlua recipe a couple of times and it is really good.
Each time I halved the recipe. I think it makes 1.75 liters.

http://www.guntheranderson.com/liqueurs/kahluare.htm

I also made an apricot liquor which I don't like but the DH does.

http://www.recipezaar.com/101353

The soaked apricots are in the fridge - he (the DH) likes to snack on them.

There's a cranberry liquor recipe on the Gunther Anderson site as well
which I made once a long time ago. I am thinking to try it again. I
drank it room temp as a cordial. It was good.

Raspberry Hooch (aka Raspberry Cordial)

A quart a quart and a pound.

1 quart Alcohol
1 Quart Raspberries
1 pound sugar

Get a jub (or bottle ) large enough to old the above. Dissolve the sugar
in the alcohol and then add the raspberries. Turn daily for a few weeks
and then let it sit for a few months, by which time it should be a deep
ruby colour. Strain out the berries and drink to your hearts content.
Don't let the sweet raspberry flavour fool you. It is potent.

LOL, love the name
Have you used grain alcohol or vodka to make this?
(sidenote-trying to add up in my head what a quart of raspberries might
cost?)

When McCain said "My friends."

When Obama gave "the look."

Instant coffee works well in this recipe. You basically make a very
strong syrup and it gets diluted with cheap vodka. I used Nescafe brand.
I did a side by side taste test - not blind though. The homemade is
not as dark - but it tastes just as good. It's not exact but it makes a
nice white russian.
I wonder if I let the syrup cook longer I'd get a darker result.

It was my mother in law's recipe and she called it hooch

I have always used alcohol, though vodka would work fine.
I make it when raspberries are in season, making sure to get the deep
red berries, not the pale kind. Even off season, the raspberries are a
lot cheaper than a quart of alcohol... about $30 here. You could use
frozen berries, which are quite reasonably priced.

I used to make homemade Kahlua, but it also had brandy. I may have
the recipe. If anyone is interested, I can try to dig for it. Maybe
brandy is the trick because color was never an issue.... or maybe I
used more instant coffee. Gotta say, my fake stuff tasted as good or
even better than the original. Got that recipe from a college "shop"
teacher back in the day.

Unfortunately "that one" came out of nowhere.

I thought McCain's way of delivering "that one" wasn't condescending
and didn't offend. It was paternalistic in the sense that McCain was
openly admitting there was an age gap and he could be Obama's father.
I thought it was a failed attempt at humor, but it's a phrase some
parents use in jest. Too bad we have to inflict so much contempt into
words.

Soaking fresh strawberries in Vodka turns out some good stuff. :-)

I've done it for Christmas gifts, but used Brandy to make Brandied fresh
or fresh frozen fruit.

It makes a nice ice cream topping.

I'm going to have to try that with my usual Cranberry/Orange relish.

I made the 44 cordial. photos etc. on my blog.
http://kokoscorner.typepad.com/mycor...-coffee-f.html

or
http://tinyurl.com/66mp9h

I'm ready to make another batch.

@@@@@ Now You're Cooking! Export Format

Orange and Coffee Flavored Liqueur, The 44 cordial

beverage alcohol

1 large naval orange
44 coffee beans
1 cup sugar; just over 44 tsp
1 liter white rum; roughly a quart

Poke 44 1-inch slits all over the orange with a paring knife; stuff a
coffee bean into each slit.
Put the orange along with the sugar and rum into a wide mouth jar with
a tight-sealing lid. Store and let steep in a cool, dark spot,
swirling the jar occasionally, for 44 days.

Remove and discard the orange and strain the liqueur through a
cheesecloth-lined strainer. Transfer to a clean bottle and store in
the freezer until ready to drink.

Serve neat or over ice.

Makes 4 cups

From the white-tie benefit this week -

After the Jesus/Superman references, Obama said something like "My
father named me. 'Barak' is Swahili for 'that one'. And someone
named me 'Hussain' who never thought I would run for president".

He's going to be a great president.

Your wish is my command!

This is dee-licious. I haven't made it in years and the last time
I made it there were no worries yet about raw egg. I'm sure you
could use Egg Beaters or other egg substitute if you are concerned.

IRISH CREAM

3 eggs
1 cup half-and-half or light cream
1 can sweetened condensed milk (like Eagle brand)
1 1/2 TBSP chocolate syrup
1/4 tsp. vanilla
2 drops coconut extract
1 cup whiskey

Mix in a blender until well combined.
Chill overnight to ripen. Keep refrigerated.
Makes 1 quart
---------------------------------

KAHLUA

1 qt. water
3 c. sugar
10 tsp. instant coffee

Combine and bring to a simmer; simmer 1 1/2 hours.

Cool. Add 5 tsp. vanilla and 3 cups vodka. Store
in a cool dark place for a month or more to ripen
for best flavor.

Makes 2 quarts.

Enjoy!

Rumtopf! I even have a large Bunzlauer Polish pottery topf meant just
for this, I never remember to start it early in the spring when
strawberries come into season. Then adding fruits as they come into
season and having these marinated fruits at the end of the year.

Maybe if I mark my calendar now to remind me in the spring I'll remember
to try it.

My Irish Cream recipe is similar, but uses 4 eggs, a pint of cream, one
can of SWM, only 1 tsp. chocolate syrup, 10-12 oz. Irish Whiskey and no
vanilla or coconut extract

My mother in law used to do that. She called it Rum Pot. As each fruit
came into season she would put a layer in the bottom of the crock and
cover it with sugar and rum. She did not use strawberries or cherries,
but just about everything else. It was incredible.

Maybe that relates to your personal experience? Mine is different, so
I didn't read anything more than face value into the phrase.
