4th annual "No Smoking/Tastes Great" Anniversary!

I gave up smoking 4 Years and 21 minutes ago. I saved $11,688.01 by not
smoking 58,440 cigarettes. I saved 6 Months, 3 Weeks and 22 hours of my life.
I gave up smoking on 9/1/2004 10:00 AM, cold turkey. Wednesday.

Best,

Well done, Andy!

I think this calls for a special RFC TFH award - well, not really a
TFH - it's actually a TFR. #16 is all yours:

Bravo!

And have a look around the house.
You probably can see out of the windows ( assuming of course, that
they've been washed in the last 4 years)

We're September babies :-) I quit 1st time in Oct 1989, relapsed in July
1996, regained my life/sanity in September, 1999. LIFE. IS. GOOD.

Good for you. I quit in July, 1994 after seven days in ICU after my
second major heart attack. Suddenly I had no more urge to smoke. It was
a miracle, or I suddenly got smart. <VBG>

Congratulations, Andy- My hub & I just celebrated 1 year yesterday. We
had tried many times, and used the gum as a crutch. I got mad about
that monkey on my back, so I went cold turkey also. I'm really glad
about quitting, but not too happy about weight gain!

Good you two quit together. It would have probably been impossible any

You are sooo right! He always did good quitting- I was always the
downfall of both of us! I'd end up sneaking them, which made him do
the same- ridiculous! BTW, Mike has asthma, and should have never
started smoking. I finally decided that I didn't want to be
responsible for killing him When I thought about it that way, it
made it so much easier to quit!!

I quit on February 22, 2005. Not soon enough, but better than never.

Now, our whole campus is smoke-free (well, it's supposed to be),
including sidewalks, lawns, public areas, parking garages, the
stadium, parks, the golf course, etc., along with the state going that
direction. Pretty soon the interstate signs will say, "Welcome to
Iowa, No Smoking Allowed."

I agree with a prohibition in restaurants, public places (like malls,
shops, etc.) and anywhere there are kids inside, but banning it in the
big outdoors seems a little extreme to me. Of course, there are
always those who stand under the "no smoking" signs and light up.

Oh, and Iowa law exempts "gaming floors" of casinos. ???

GM replies:

Smoking and gambling (and drinking) are addictions that go hand - in - hand,
show me a chronic gambler and I'll show you a chain smoker - and also a
severe alcoholic and someone who's messed - up financially. Illannoy has
banned smoking in casinos and IIRC revenue is down by a goodly amount.
Smokers are driving to adjacent states (IA, WI, IN, MO...) where smoking is
still allowed on the floor...

One thing that I've noticed since we went smoke - free in Illannoy on Jan.
1st is how much smoking simply STINKS. In a bar situation I never used to
notice the smoke, as it was so much a part of the "background". Now that
bars are smoke - free I can really smell the stench of smokers, it's on
their hair, clothes, in their breaths and on their skins. And it doesn't
matter that they go outside to smoke, even if they haven't smoked for hours
they still STINK...

Since sulfur is a main component of the stink their aura is that of
something that's been dipped in a vat of raw sewage...IOW they smell like
shit, *literally*.

Naaaaasty habit, hope it dies out totally eventually...

While I'm anti-smoking. God knows I've put others out, I have no right to

I know - I'm not a fanatic like some ex-smokers, but I really
appreciate not having to walk through clouds of smoke to enter a
building. Still, I don't think casino gaming floors should be
exempt. And I hate that it makes the smokers "second class"
citizens. Would that drinkers would become pariahs, also....
