Then click mail. Put in your "screen name" and password in the appropriate boxes. No need to EVER click the AOL icon on the desktop. No need to even have the program installed. It's a completely web based service, just like Yahoo Mail or Gmail. I had AOL Lite for $5.95 per month for about 11 years then about 2 years ago they raised it to $7.95. I called them up and asked to be relieved of the billing as all I was using them for was email. They were very nice about it and even thanked me for being with them for 13 years. For one thing, it is slower than Firefox (or any Mozilla product)There also seem to be more security problems with IE as can be seen from the myriad of patches required to be downloaded. The add-ons and plug-ins available for the Mozilla-based browsers make surfing so much more enjoyable like not having to see annoying flash ads all over the web pages. I am a huge fan of the ability to manage bookmarks that IE just doesn't have. I can also save my bookmarks on a disk or backup hard drive so that I will have them in case of a crash. They are in a place that is easy to find without drilling through piles and piles of program files. If I am borrowing a machine while traveling, I get stuck with IE and then the reality of how much better FF is sets in. -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. Bad punctuation Good Friends. Good Life |

It really ticks me off when people who should know better assume the entire world has nothing but Microsoft products. Today, I was forwarded a file in *.wps format. Even Microsoft doesn't use it any longer. Their newer stuff uses *.doc. Open Office can't even open those files. Since I refuse to download software to my computer that will only serve a single purpose, I wrote back asking the sender to resend it in *.doc, *rtf, notepad or wordpad. In the event she can't figure out how to do this (which I believe is the case) I told her to print it out and scan it and save it as a *.jpg then send it to me. The file is about a Mah Jongg cruise that I'm taking in February and I probably need to read it or I wouldn't bother. -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. Bad punctuation Good Friends. Good Life |

IE in its default configuration is also much more vulnerable to Malware. I've been using Firefox for about 6 years - one of the main reasons being that it has had tabbed browsing (like a few other non-MS browsers) for a lot of those years (IIRC, IE only introduced tabbed browsing with version 7)... Most folks won't notice any difference. Most of the FF advocates will say it's faster and has tabs but personally I don't notice any difference in speed and IE7 has tabs too. I use FF cause I want to have control of the Javascripts being run on a page - NoScript. It's convenient to be able to transfer files through a browser tab - FireFTP. FF has a useful download manager and I use a theme that maximizes my browser window. There's a nifty set of web development tools that can be called up through the tools menu. I can download and save videos by clicking a button. You should know that Microsoft is trying to build IE more in the image of FF - that's why you have the tabs and the add-on manager, the pop-up blocker, the phishing filter, a button to delete browsing history and probably a lot of other improvements. It won't make much difference to most people which browser they use since they're not into using the tools available or interested in controlling Javascripts on their browser. Those folks are most interested in functionality and compatibility and should stay with what they're familiar with. You should however, be aware that most of the improvements to IE is being driven by FF. |

I create docs using MSWord and MSPublisher. It's really iffy to send a doc in a .doc or .pub format so the best bet is to convert the doc into a pdf - the de facto standard for docs. You can find free pdf converter/printer drivers which make it almost certain that your recipient will be able to read your doc. Last month I sent in a newspaper ad in a .pub format and it got printed missing the heading. I notified the newspaper about this and the second time they ran the ad, it was missing the heading and the name of the company. As I said, it's really iffy to send a doc in anything other than a pdf. :-) |
