Something New with Lemon Grass

When I was at a Farmer's Market last Saturday morning, I picked up a
few bunches of Lemon Grass. Originally, I thought about using it in
Asian Chicken Ginger Soup, which also uses Lemon Grass as one of the
ingredients.

But, I'd like to see what else I could do with it as well. Do you
guys have any ideas?

I was marinating a couple of pork tenderloins on Sunday and used lemon
grass, kaffir lime leaves, ginger and garlic, among other things in
the marinade.

I've made kebabs a few times using rosemary stalks, I wonder if you
could do same thing with lemon grass (probably have to make the initial
hole with a skewer)

Steve
PS Am growing a lemongrass plant from a shop bought stalk that I left in
water to grow roots, seems to be working

I have a lemongrass plant and have used it with coconut milk and cooked
mussels in the broth. You could also use the grass in curry.

I have the lemongrass in a pot outside and I have to constantly chase the
stray cats away from it. They LOVE it!

Okay. I am off to buy fencing for my kaffir lime immediately.
Here I was hoping it would escape marauders overnight.... I do
hope the cats don't live that as much as they love that lemongrass....

Boron - Hmmm Pork Tenderloins. That's an interesting idea. Sounds
really good!

Steve - You were able to actually grow some roots on a stalk of lemon
grass? I wonder if I should try that.

Kili and Jean - I had no idea cats were attracted to the stuff!

Plant some of it in your back yard. Really.

Will it take over like bamboo?

Myrl, I brought my plant into the house this winter before a freeze, and
even my HOUSE cats were all over it. If you grow it, protect it - I'm not
kidding!

Nah, just pot it. Water it. It's fine.

I had a bowl of mussels once that featured lemongrass as the
predominant flavor. White wine, lemongrass, maybe some garlic,
mussels simmered until they opened/were done. Pretty sure there
weren't any red pepper flakes but right now that sounds like a
possible addition. Liquid might have included some fish stock as well
as the wine, but I don't know. At any rate, the mussels and
lemongrass combo was delicious. -aem

No, it will not take over like bamboo. It will get a little bigger over
the years, though. My lemongrass froze back, here in Louisiana, but it
came right back. It did not get cold enough in Texas for it to freeze.

Make tea with it and use the tea to make ice cream, and no, I don't have
a recipe for it.

Best of luck with your lemon grass. I started growing it, because it
was hard to find fresh lemon grass, plus it was $3 for the puny 2-3
pieces I would get. When you grow it, you have nice, fresh lemon grass
all the time.
