Default How do you feel about black licorice

In my experience, some foods are a love them or hate them kind of thing...no
wishy-washy. Black licorice is one of those things. Most of the folks in my
family *love* black licorice. My brother and I both hate it. I go so far as
to dislike star anise in almost anything, because it then tastes, to me,
like you put licorice in it. So, my question actually has 2 parts...
a. Do you like/love or dislike/hate black licorice?
b. Do you like the licorice-like flavor of other foods, like anise?

Strangely timely, this. Italy is atwitter with reactions to two TV
commercials playing right now. Mpst Italians shrug, but almost all
expatriates are "Say what?" and find them racist. They star a handsome
black actor and are selling something licorice flavored. I could get you a
link, but it's in Italian and also refers to verbiage that means nothing
even if you know Italian, unless you grew up here.

Exact opposite.
Love licorice, hate star anise, Ouyzo, Sambucca etc etc etc.
I do not know why.

That's kind of interesting. I will go along minding my own business,
then after a number of months (even years), I will all of a sudden
have a craving for black licorice. This craving will generally last
awhile. I have been told that if you are anemic you may have black
licorice cravings - but I don't know if that is true for certain.

I have a chicken curry stew recipe, which I toss in a few star anise.
I like them too - but not every day!

My husband and my dogs LOVE the Panda black licorice in a box. If my husband
wants some licorice, he has to enjoy it while the dogs are outside. All they
have to hear is the rattle of the box and they are immediately sitting right
in front of him, waiting for their piece. Now, it has to be the Panda brand.
My husband tried the Swizzler brand of black licorice. It was so funny to
see both dogs actually spit out the Swizzler. They gave him on of those
"WHAT IS THAT??" looks.

I used to. I also liked the red twizzlers.

No. I tried Ouzo once or twice. Wasn't bad, wasn't greatness. Novel effect by
adding water and have it turn into a skim milk looking drink.

Default How do you feel about black licorice

I used to like the flavor of black licorice in candy. Then I realized
it was causing pretty severe acid reflux. The symptom went away several
hours after not eating licorice. Now I associate the taste with the
symptom. Once, after trying a new herbal tea concoction at Star Bucks,
I came down with the same symptom. I went back, looked at the
ingredients, realized that it had licorice and had to start being
careful about unknown herbal teas.

Fennel has never tasted like licorice to me, and I like it fine.

Just now I googled to find the difference between licorice and anise.
I'm running into some confusion in the way the words are used-- fennel,
anise and licorice. Some say anise and fennel are the same thing.
Others say the licorice in candy comes from anise.

One of them definitely gives me that nasty acid feeling in my throat.
The others don't.

I love black licorice, star anise, and Pernod, although I'm not fond of
most of the anise-flavored liqueurs as I find them too sweet.

"Black licorice" is an oxymoron... the red stuff is really a gum drop
morphed into the licorice candy configuration.

I love most licorice candy, some I find repulsive, like the salty
kind... the licorice candy centers of Good N' Plenty has a wonderful
flavor, unfortunately I can't find it without the awful sugary
coatings.

Licorice, anise, and fennel are three different plants, and to me
don't taste nearly the same. There are two types of fennel, one
produces the culinary fennel seed, the other produces the edible bulb
(Florence Fennel), both are easy to grow... I don't recommend growing
seed fennel, it's extremely invasive/prolific. Anise/aniseed is from
the herb Pimpinella anisum, a member of the carrot family. Star anise
is from an entirely different plant (a tree), I don't care for it.

star anise
A star-shaped, dark brown pod that contains a pea-sized seed in each
of its eight segments. Native to China, star anise comes from a small
evergreen tree. Although the flavor of its seeds is derived from
anethol (the same oil that gives ANISE seed its pronounced flavor),
star anise has a different heritage — the magnolia family. Its flavor
is slightly more bitter than that of regular anise seed. In Asian
cuisines, star anise is a commonly used spice and tea flavoring. It's
also widely used to flavor LIQUEURS and baked goods in Western
cultures. It can be found whole in Asian markets and some
supermarkets, and as a ground ingredient in Chinese FIVE-SPICE
POWDER.

Interesting question, kimberly!

I love black licorice, but I hate anise and fennel.

I still do.

No, I really don't. Can't stand it. But, isn't fennel discribed as
licorice flavored? Because I love that in sausage.

I like licorice candy (and black jellybeans!) and some anise flavored
things like anise biscotti or those snowball things I sometimes find in
the Italian bakery. Oh, and I like anise pizzelle. I also like Ouzo and
Sambuca on occasion.

I do not like anise or licorice in savory dishes at all. I don't like
fennel either. I just don't get it. My husband says I just haven't had
it prepared correctly. ;-)

Fennel looks delicious, I wanted to like it. So when a restaurant
served it as a side dish, I gave it a try. ptui.

Fennel seed, I guess it doesn't taste licorice-y to me.

I like them all, licorice candy, anise, fennel, star anise.
I'm not too keen on the fennel bulb as a vegetable but I'll
eat it.

This reminds me of my reaction to mint: I *hate* mint
flavored candy, baked goods and ice cream -- I feel like I'm
eating toothpaste. But I don't mind mint in my salad and I
don't know how I'd react to finding it in meat or fish.

Hate it. My dad used to buy it when I was a kid and I swear he only did
it because he knew he wouldn't have to share.

Ptui. Exactly my feeling.

And now that I think of it...I am ok with fennel seed in sausage. I have
also had a few types of Moroccan cookies which have fennel seeds and I
like those a lot. Go figure.

For some people, correct preparation is to make sure there is no fennel :-)

Hopefully I will not be accused of licorice racial prejudice
when I say that I hate it!!!! I can tolerate the red licorice
but then it's not really licorice, is it? What I hate is the
licorice flavor, although anise, which is similar, is okay in
some applications, but I'm not that fond if it either.

I feel the same about coconut ... it's fine in some things like on a
cake, for instance, but please, keep it off my shrimp. I do not
like it in what I prefer to be savory dishes.

I can take or leave black licorice. Used to buy hard candy licorice sticks
that were pretty tasty.

(star) anise is okay in small quantities, I suppose. I don't eat a lot of
Asian foods where it seems to be prevalent. Licorice/anise liqueurs hold no
appeal.

I like black liquorice. Star anise is not my favorite spice,
although it seems to be necessary in some things like red-cooked
items and some Vietnamese stews.... Regular anise... sometimes
yes, sometimes no. Depends on the context.

Texture can be a big part of the licorice experience. It is usually dry and tough
to chew. I remember eating Licorice Allorts as a kid. They were one of my
grandmother's favourites but I never much cared for them. A few years ago I got
some at a Dutch delicatessen and was amazed at how soft and tasty they were.
However, I was not at all impressed with the salty licorice that the Dutch love.

It's okay. Don't love it, don't hate it.

I enoy fennel bulb (sliced thin in salalds), fenel seeds (ground in
seasonings and rubs mixes), star anise (mostly in 5 spice powder),
licorice (both black and red) and some licorice-y liquors (like galliano).

Hate black licorice and all things anise. I'm sure if you presented
me with a laundry list of things with some anise flavoring to one
degree or another, I'd find a couple I liked... but I can't think of
anything on the spur of the moment.

For some reason, star anise doesn't register on my anise dislike
scale. It's usually combined with something else and anise isn't a
dominant flavor.

I had some jelly beans the other day. I sorted out all the black ones .
.. . so I could eat them last. They're my favorite.

Dislike is too nice a word I HATE IT! I don't even like to be around someone
who had just had some.

No I thank you no!

I can stand a little that is blended in Chinese 5 Spice but that is about as
strong as I can stand.

Jelly Belly sells all black all year. Another of my favorite
confections is licorice bridge mix & licorice allsorts.

Sen-Sen is a licorice blend type confection that is good too.

I don't know any kind but black. Dislike. Ditto anise.

I don't like coconut in meat dishes either, but I like coconut
concoctions like Mounds/Almound Joy, Good Humor coconut ice cream
pops, and my favorite coconut smoothie with vanilla ice cream,
pineapple juice, a banana, and lotsa rum.

I like to keep my jelly bean eating to Easter time along with Peeps and
Cadbury Creme Eggs.

I like the bridge mix but the allsorts are just ok. I have never had
Sen-Sen, but you got me thinking about licorice gum - blackjack?
