Default Starbucks closes nationwide

Starbucks closes nationwide for 3 hours, one day (Feb. 26, 2008), to re-train
employees. A BS (3-hour tour) employee coffee break, imho.

Why this should even be news is beyond me.

What were they doing wrong all this time?!?

"We believe that this is a bold demonstration of our commitment to our core

because people wanting to advance from a career of burger
flipping to barrista might care?

i bet they're retraining to put more of the least expensive
ingredients in the coffee & baked crap. lower quality = higher
profits, you know.

i don't get the popularity of burnt coffee drinks. dark roast
is wonderful. burnt is just nasty.

If you had a job, instead of being home 24x7 collecting disability checks
and conducting obesity research, you'd discover that employers sometimes
hold meetings and train employees.

I'd call it humor. Kind of dry with a light sprinkle of sarcasm. Who needs
substance? Just look at our presidential candidates.

I think there is substance. The point of doing this is to create buzz
for free instead of buying it with marketing as is usually required.

For sure about being normal activity, But for some reason Starbucks went
out of their way to promote this because I have seen it mentioned in
multiple locations/contexts. Likely they are doing it to get free buzz.

All large corporations have divisions whose sole purpose is to issue
press releases to garner publicity. It is very common and surely no
reason to single out SB for taking advantage of the opportunity.

If you visit corporate web sites, you'll usually find a section
devoted to the releases.

Who's the corporate runner-up to take offense in the "fast food coffee"
market compared to Starbucks??? McDonalds! Great breakthrough there!

So what? Lounge and wi-fi compute and drink fat-laden coffee away from work?

McDonalds does that too and they'll still feed you the worst shit on earth,
imho!

gloria,

Sorry, I don't drink coffee (caffiene) anymore.

SB will close at the end of time, maybe? <G>

Sure, for some reason this one is getting a lot of play from various
angles. One source is claiming that some revolutionary thing regarding
apple is going to happen because Starbucks is changing wireless
providers and because it is so exciting and new they need to close the
stores to do it. Steve Jobs is a master BS craftsman so they may be
invoking him to make it mysterious too.

That means Jobs is doing his job well. Having a company head who can
make people hang on his every word if financially beneficial.

The WSJ is filled with business puff-pieces every day. So are the
business sections of other papers and online services.

Press releases by big consumer-oriented companies such as Starbucks or
Apple, whose offerings and stores are ubiquitous, will likely make
it to the mass stream media & blogosphere pretty quickly and stick in
your mind.

I do a lot of imagery research for large corporations. None of this is
out of the ordinary.

Yabbut, they don't *ever* close down the store. It's stupid. Stagger
the training so everybody takes it, but the store stays open. Hire a
couple of temps, or shift a couple of employees from store A to Store B,
while B trains, and then switch around the other way when it's time to
train A. The training is already staggered due to it happening during
"local" time.

I think personally that it's just a publicity stunt.

I don't think anything is out of the ordinary. I understand having a
convincing charismatic liar (ahem "creative marketer") is an important
thing for many enterprises, cults or whatever to grow and it is
fascinating watching how people can be manipulated.

Of course it is and like Mel and others point out, it will no doubt work
brilliantly. What are they going to retrain them to do/say? "I'm sorry, we
don't have a bathroom" in Spanish? "It's not medium, sir. It's
"grawn-day"? "No sir, the wifi is not free"? "Yes, that IS a Starbucks
across the street"?

No, they needed the publicity. Who's ever heard of Starbucks?

I used their store locator, and asked my wife how many Starbucks there
were within 20 miles of our house. She guessed four. No, I didn't say
"two" miles. There are 63.

You are joking....right? Please tell me you're joking?

I can't imagine how they figured an area that size could continue to
support that sort of saturation? It is downright depressing.

I remember once there was an explosion, or maybe it was a bomb
threat, something like that at a Starbucks in LA. Leno said it was
so upsetting until they realized everything's okay, just go into the
Starbucks across the street.

He put it funnier, but what kind of franchise agreements do they have,
seems like they make no effort to protect the franchisers from
competition. Yikes.

Aren't Starbuck's supposed to have bathrooms for their patrons...???
Isn't this a law...???

The nearest Starbuck's down the street is right across from my corner
bar, the Starbuck's patrons used to come across to use the bar's
johns. They were telling their patrons that they did *not* have a
bathroom - a lie. The bar staff got REAL tired of the constant
parade of SB patrons - many of them jerks, even moomies with strollers
coming in to change diapers - coming in, so there is now a sign on the
bar door saying "NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS". When I happen to espy someone
from SB sneeking in to use the loo, I'll accost them, ****ing with
them and saying stuff like, "You have to buy a drink to use the
john...you have to give the bartender a buck to use the
john...etc.".

The bar owner had repeatedly told the SB manager NOT to be sending
their patrons over to use the johns. She eventually had to "pull some
rank", threatening to contact the city (Chicago) alderman about
various "issues" (SB patrons illegally parking, etc.)...she did
contact SB HQ about the issue, and this mishegoss finally stopped.

Another reason to hate SB, they are poor neighbors and citizens...

More or less depressing than getting a count of the Dunkin Donuts,
McD's, etc?

In fact, I have over 75 Dunkins within *ten* miles. I have well over
that 63 figure of McD's places within 20 miles of my house. I got
bored hitting the button to look for more.

I used the store locator for Tim Hortons coffee and donut shops to see how many
there were around here. It didn't have a 20 mile increment, so I tried the 10
mile one and there were 18 of them, and I live in a rural area. I jumped to the
50 mile finder and there were 100. There are three in this town alone, and a
population on only 14,000.

I forget how population dense some areas of the country are? It is hard
to imagine sometimes.
If I were buying a franchise like that I'd want assurance from corporate
that they'd protect my interests and require so much distance between
shops. Wouldn't one Dunkin Donuts be more financially lucrative than two
selling half as much? I know it isn't that simple but....geesh. 75??
