Flavors for water
I must admit that I'm one of those people, who is probably responsible
for an excess of plastic water bottles in the land fill. I made a conscious decision to put a filter device on my water faucet, so I could drink more tap water. However, I have one more thing I'd like to overcome. The bottled water I have been drinking, has been natural fruit flavored. The brand is, "Fruit2-0" - naturally flavored. What I'm wondering - is there a flavor product out there, which can simply be squeezed into tap water to flavor it? I know about Crystal Light, but I'm looking for something that would be a natural flavor product. I have squeezed limes, lemons and oranges. . .But, would like to try something different for a change. Myrl Jeffcoat http://www.myrljeffcoat.com |

Why use weird flavoring stuff when you can use a splash of juice? Cranberry is great. Cranraspberry makes the water taste like Koolaid! Otherwise, use juice. White grape, pomegranate, blueberry, whatever looks good! |

I tried it and while it was great stuff....doesn't it also contain sugar? or at least an artificial sweetener?? A lot of folks at work bring those large lucite type hiking/biking bottles and mix in some Crystal Light but other than a hunk of real lemon, orange or lime, I can't think of how else to flavor it up "naturally" ??? What about dilute teas? |

Yes, such things do exist: http://www.truelemon.com I think they're dreadful, myself. But they're exactly what you asked for. I've only tried the TrueLime. Bleech! Real limes are much much better. |

What about dilute teas? Fruit2-0 has a bit of sucrose in it. . .I love the stuff - especially the Natural Peach and the Natural Cherry. I take it along to the Health Center, when I swim laps. I like the idea about the teas too! Thanks for all the ideas, guys! Myrl Jeffcoat |

I've tried a lot of flavorings but I find the juice of half a lime in a glass of iced water to be my favorite. It adds just enough interest to take away the temptation to have a beer if you are concerned about weight. I don't like flavored water with meals, however. Bottled water is exactly the same as your very own tap water only it comes from someone elses hose bib... you need a Reverse Osmosis filter... cost less than a nickle a gallon. I like to add citrus too but when I want something different I freeze my RO water, shake with gin and strain off the ice... juniper flavored water... for an extra flavor boost add an olive. ups.com... > What I'm wondering - is there a flavor product out there, which can > simply be squeezed into tap water to flavor it? I see "infused" water in a lot of hotel lobbies these days. Basically, it looks like a big water container with ice, fruit, and water. When you fill your cup from the spigot, of course you don't get the fruit itself, but it flavors the water nicely. I often see lemon, lime, or orange slices. Strawberries are popular, too, and probably my second favorite after lemon. I think grapefruit would be good, but I don't recall having seen or tried it. Maybe you could do something like that in a jar (like a sun-tea jar or something) in your refrigerator? (I know you said you've squeezed lemons, limes and oranges -- but maybe the strawberries and grapefruits would be worth a shot.) -- Echo |

Hispanics in our area do this, with apple juice, orange juice, grape, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapefruits, lemons, limes. Lemons and grapefruit are my favorite. You can sweeten your glass with a little Splenda, honey or sugar, or you can drink it plain. Becca |

It may be naturally flavored, but have you really looked at the entire ingredients list? I went to kraftfoods.com; here's a random sample: Ingredients: SPRING WATER, NATURAL FLAVOR, CITRIC ACID, MALIC ACID, SODIUM BENZOATE AND POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVE FRESHNESS), SUCRALOSE, A NONNUTRITIVE SWEETENER. That was from the Fruit2O lemon flavor. > What I'm wondering - is there a flavor product out there, which can > simply be squeezed into tap water to flavor it? > > I know about Crystal Light, but I'm looking for something that would > be a natural flavor product. I think Crystal Light would be just about as natural as Fruit2O For years, I didn't drink water with meals. Beer, soda, iced tea, etc. A few years ago I just started drinking tapwater with ice in it. I bet you could get used to plain water if you really wanted to. It's what we're evolved to drink, after all. Cindy Hamilton |

I saw an ad the other day for Pur filter systems -- they're now offering flavor dispensers. Maybe the manufacturer of your system might have something similar: http://www.purwaterfilter.com/purflop.html I like water just fine on it's own, but I know a lot of folks will drink it more with fruit flavorings... -- Jani in WA |

Yes, this is one of my favorites. Cucumber water has such a refreshing flavor and scent. Something about it is so cooling. One could also make fruit juice ice cubes to drop into and flavor water. I add lemon to water to give it a little tang. And it's gotta be $1.00/gal. spring "tap" water! Andy |

A friend and I were talking about this the other day, how these little things have such an impact. I can hardly drink water for some reason, so I drink a mild tea (sipping on it) all day long. Just cannot take a 'gulp.' Sometimes I will heat water to drink at the end of the day. Perhaps it has something to do with having a cistern and seeing critters in it when pouring a glass - Shivvers to this day! Dee Dee |

If it's been filtered it shouldn't have any unpleasant flavour or odour to need covering up, and it's very refreshing (and totally calorie-free!) If you MUST have flavouring in it, try a slice of lemon/lime, or a small dash of lemonade/limeade. I bought a bottle of that all-natural limeade and it was too strong for me, so I diluted it 3:1 and it was extremely refreshing (not to mention much more economical!) |

She was asking for "flavorings for water," not a diatribe on why she should drink her water unflavored, right? |
