Here in the middle of the Niagara Peninsula it is a very comfortable 23 C
with light rain.

Here at work I'm at 23°C, heaven, and at home it's around 27°C, but
outise... sigh, it's almost 36°C now...
Brixen was friggin' fresher than here! And there were very good "finferli"
(Cantharellus cibarius), I made some with them and it's divine, both there
in Brixen and here after my return.

Recipe for 3 persons:

200 g fresh finferli
80 g butter
2 cloves, garlic
a very small bunch, parsley
1 cup bechamel
1 quart vegetable broth (not all is needed)

Metl the butter in a pan and add the garlic, let it fry for a minute or two
(you don't need it to turn blonde-brownish) and then add the finferli: they
must be coarsely chopped (1/4), mediumly chopped (1/2) and very finaly
minced (1/4). Let the mushrooms loose theyr water, and when the water starts
to evaporate (it should take about 10 minutes) just add the bechamel and a
portion of the broth. How much broth to use? Just check the density of the
soup as you pour the broth, when it's as you want it just stop adding broth.
On monday I made it using a little bit more than half the broth, one could
prefer the soup more runny so could add more broth.
Recipe stolen from a dish I ate in Germany and then discussed with the
friends on the italian NG to figure out how they did such a soup (süppe, in
german). And we got it right, this soup is divine. Obviously, one needs
fresh and GOOD finferli (here in Reggio Emilia we find only sad, untasty
finferli).

Yes, they had a lucky spring and a humid summer start, so they are getting
'shrooms everywhere.
You'll probably see them around end of august, if you're still up there over
Turin.
Keep an open eye for them, in my opinion they are far better than porcini
(Boletus Edulis): slightly more subtle, definitely more elegant and complex.
Best wine pairing with the soup recipe: a sauvignon from the same area, as
the mighty Quarz 2004 from Kellerei Terlan.

I don't know if I agree with you. Porcini are my favourite for flavour.
Finferli are not so tasty IMO.
But I must say I have eaten them only one time in my life

I was in Europe last year during the heat wave, don't want to repeat
that again! Ugh. I'm heading for Canada in a couple of days, current
temperatures in Ashland, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver are all about
the same as mine so I should be ok. I-5 in California will be a
killer though, thank goodness for auto air conditioning!

We have a high overcast and 62°F (16.67°C) outside at the moment - it
will climb to 70°F today. Humidity is 69%.

You have my sympathy. We were in Sweden a few weeks ago and it was cool
and rainy the whole time. We came back to Colorado to find temperatures
in the mid-to-high 90's. And our air conditioner failed four days ago.
It will be repaired Tuesday, but in the meantime the forecast is for 100
degree F temperatures in the Denver area this weekend.

It's pretty cool here for July, right now. I'm in Los Angeles, USA. My
building-shaded outdoor probe shows 90.5 F as I write. It's 90 F here
at my desk; I haven't needed to turn on the air conditioning, but I'm
sitting in the breeze of a desk fan. It's about 4 PM.

Well today my smoker arrived...I just finished assembling it and this week-

It has finally cooled off here. 72 outside and 76 in the house. I got the
oven going today and made an apple crisp. Wanted to use up the rest of a
bag of gluten free oats that were soon to expire.

Good to hear from you again-

It is only about 84F. which is unseasonably cool here today in
California's Central Valley. My kitchen temperatures at dinner time are
usually in the mid-90s through most of the summer. I often eat outside
at around 8pm as the temperature has usually dropped by then. Nights
usually cool down to around 60 by morning so the house can usually be
cooled down with a window fan. It is quite possible to get used to it.
It is a major tomato growing area and there are wine grapes nearby. No
mushrooms until the Fall rains, though. ;={(>

so no need to shower every 30 minutes..

We live in the Southwest US (altitude about 1600 metres) and the
temperature has been between 35 and 40 C for the last few weeks.
Fortunately we do have a new cooler; it took two weeks from when the old
cooler broke down until someone could put in the new one. Fans were a
big help!

I went to a GTG for a group from a website for which I write. It
started at 4 PM to avoid heat. That didn't work. Broiling is a mild
word to apply to heat that although dry causes you to put out your own
vapor cloud. I finally left at 10:15 because my eyes burned. Why?
they were surrounded with salt crystals! No relief until home and fresh
water.

While there I drank mostly water and never had to go to the potty
because I was sweating it all out. We were on a south facing hillside
under enormous umbrellas. It reminded me of the technology for a solar
oven. When the water in the bottles feels hot to your mouth, you know
it's hot.

In Tramin (Termeno) thay have a roadsign stating "Home of the Gewürztraminer
grape". Gewurz means "spiced" while Traminer means "from Tramin". But I'm
not sure if the grape actually originated there.

Run for the finferli and you will forget porcini for a while. They are
delicious.

It's a Sauvignon Blanc, from a very good brand: cooperative winery where the
local farmers bring theyr grapes, with a good ability to select the best
grapes for theyr high-end wines.

Neither. It consists of peeled fresh apple slices in a ceramic oven
dish-- shallow is best, seasoned with usually cinnamon and sugar, then a
topping of flour, butter, spices and oatmeal is mixed and scattered on
top. Into the oven, not long afterward with delicious perfume filling
the kitchen, out it comes to be eaten warm with thick cream or ice
cream. It is a dolce al cucchiaio.

Similar desserts are crumbles and cobblers. All are good.

It's been running about 75F here, about 40 miles north of San Francisco,
during the day. Nights aren't much cooler.
