I only eat it for the protein. Aw shucks, I tried say that without smiling!

Would you and Bluto like to try OutBack? I won a gift certificate last
month, and every time I've tried to go, something happened and I couldn't
go.
E-mail me (you do still have the address?) with your snail-addy and it's
yours.

I've never been there but everytime I drove by the parking lot was
filled to overflowing, so now I guess I'll have to.

I hope she takes you up on it. I just ate the other half of my ribeye
dinner,
and it was wunnnnnderful! I forgot to mention the creamy horseradish
sauce they serve in a ramekin with the steak--it's very good.

Outback is decent. I used to clean a kitchen at one, and it was the
least disgusting kitchen I cleaned with that company.

Chili's is 2/3 of the way to being an Applebee's, right?
No thanks.

How can there be an "average" when you've gone only twice? That's like
comparing night and day, but "dusk" doesn't make an average of the two

The way I see it, chances are one in two you'll have a bad experience.
Bad for restaurants, worse for airline flights!

I have had some good meals at Outbacks in my area. Even so, when I
travel, I prefer to avoid eating at the same restaurant chains I can eat
at when I am not traveling.

Try this http://www.outback.com/foodandmenus/pdf/C1.pdf
If that doesn't work for you, I found the link here
http://www.outback.com/locations/

I can tell from the pictures that I won't like that food. Their
steaks are a weak color and thin.

Cattlemen's is the place I go if I eat at a chain

Ditto here. :-) We eat out maybe 2 or 3 times per year.

That place is underrated.

With the fatty stuff, it's a rib steak. A rib eye is the
lean eye of that steak. If you order a 12-oz ribeye and
get a 12-oz rib steak, you're being ripped off.

I think they put sugar in the bread. Maybe not, but
it tastes like it.

>appetizer was greasy and deep-fried delicious as always. Service was great,

I stay away from the gimmicky stuff.

The "Outback special" is a 9-oz sirloin. Baked potato,
salad, iced tea. $20/person, including tax and a $3 tip.
And for some reason their steaks taste better than you
expect. It's the meat. They're getting really good meat.

And they do a rack of lamb some justice.

You can order a 7-oz filet if you want quality over
quantity. They'll cook it right if you do.

Yup. Chicken, fish, pasta, sandwiches. The wings are
not bad. You can't let anyone get away with not going
because they don't want steak.

I've never had that problem at RL.

Quite the opposite.

I used to go in to RL for lunch once or twice a week.

They had trout, but the cajun trout was blackened.

I asked them to change it by doing it broiled, with the
cajun spice, without butter or oil (trout has enough in
it), and just carrots instead of the veggie mix.

After a few tweaks over a few weeks, they'd recognize
the order in the kitchen and get it exact.

See, here's the funny thing.

I think the same thing of all the restaurants I go to....

Ask for your steak "seasoned and seared". They punch it
up a little extra then.

Or maybe you could convince them to serve you a bacon
and egg pizza...

The only thing to get at Chili's is directions to Outback.

There's bound to be one nearby. And worth the drive

I'm trying to think of what they could do to make it
more authentically Australian.

But I don't think Americans will go for mutton and
kangaroo on the menu...

Actually, their black bean burger is uniquely good. I've
had just about every type of veggie burger out there and
it's probably in the top two or three.

Chili's is top-notch Tex-mex/burger joint food. And they have
always had vegetarian dishes. Twenty-five years ago they had
veggie tacos in Houston. This is when they were still a private
company and had no stores outside of Texas.

I don't know much about it, but when my husband was in Australia 4
years ago for work, they went to a bar and it was pretty much
understood that if you ordered Fosters, you were generally laughed at
and ridiculed. He said that there were much better beer to be had.
Too bad he doesn't drink, so that he could sample for me.

While far from perfect, Chilis is head and shoulders above Applebees,

applebees.

I always want to eat it, but never can get past that funky aftertaste.
Honestly, I think it's just me. I made some new zealand lamb loin
kebab last week and Scott and my daughter thought they were fantastic,
I just ate the couscous I made on the side (sauteed onion and mushroom
mixed in).

We have most definitely had wildly different experiences.

While I have eaten at Applebees on occasion, I ate at Chili's
once. There was nothing about the place from the dull food to
the indifferent service and the menu that would make me go
back.

I went to a Chili's *once* and was so disappointed with the menu, I ordered
broccoli. Thankfully, they added cheese and mushrooms, since they knew it
was my main dish. That was a nice touch.

My policy when I travel for business or pleasure by air (which is
several times a year) is quite simple. I want to do things I can't do at
home. That includes dining out. Why would I want to spend a lot of time
and money traveling, only to do things and eat things that I can do at
home. This is why the only time I ever see a movie when I travel is if
the weather is really bad and I can't think of anything else to do and
its why I rarely ever break my rule of dining at a restaurant chain that
operates restaurants in the vicinity of my home. Variety is the spice of
life.

We'll give it a try if you don't want the certificate. We can always use
it. Is it store specific or general? In any case, I don't think I have
your e-mail addy anymore. Here's mine and we can exchange addresses:
kilikini at tampabay dot rr dot com. (I know you're smart enough to figure
that one out.)

Hey, are you planning on going up to Micanopy Jan 1st. for the last Big Jim
bash?

Allan's been cyber-morphing lately. There is a guy on alt.food.fast-food
that he just loves to pester. The guy keeps killfiling him, so he morphs.
Bluto was his last name, now he's Billy Bong Thornton.
