Waybackwhen I was growing up and developing my perception of the
comparative values of things, dry milk was really cheap stuff -
something that the gummint gave away to the po' folks.

Was thinking of getting some yesterday ( it's convenient to add to
oatmeal - regular or instant - before cooking or reconstituting.).
Went to local supermarket (suburban Philadelphia, Pa.). Price for
2-pound box - 10 '1-quart envelopes' - was 5.87 USD, or $2.36 per
gallon, reconstituted. Price for gallon of fresh nonfat milk was
2.72.

Not very frugal, considering trouble to reconstitute and taste of
result.

Wondering what caused change of relative prices.

Something different about government milk subsidies perhaps?
I wouldn't bother with the stuff. I'd rather go without than tolerate
that stuff voluntarily. <shiver>

We always drank the dry stuff as a kid. My parents mixed it up, and
added a little of the real stuff, and then put it in the fridge. The
fridge is the important part.

I've bought it a couple of times in the last few decades, but not
recently. We buy milk two gallons at a time. I don't tolerate it, so I
use a little in cooking and maybe a slurp in my coffee. My younger son
drinks a half gallon a day. Strangely enough, he couldn't tolerate it
as a baby. He was strictly breast fed, but my wife had to give it up
because it went through her and made him upset.

Funny i should run across this post today, i was thinking the same
thing about dry milk. Except i don't drink it, i need it for bread and
cheesemaking. When i first needed it i thought, great finally a cheap
ingredient! Ha...such is not the case as its just as, if not more
expensive than regular milk. I had heard reconstituted dry milk and
cream were the next best thing to raw milk for making cheese. However
im already battling the economy bug in making the cheese myself. Dry
milk just adds to the cost and I dont know why its that expensive. Come
to think of it, why the heck does milk cost almost $4 dollars a gallon
these days!
