If you read the blurb at the very top of the Google page:

"Google Froups will be undergoing planned maintenance on Jan 9th, 2007.
During this time, some features may be temporarily unavailable. We
appreciate your patience as we work to improve Google Froups."

For the newbies; the 1st of the year is when most software is updated.
