Microwave for 60 seconds. OK, timer on 60 seconds. START, a micro-second
later it's 59 seconds.

Set the timer for 61 seconds for 60 seconds of cooking!

DOH.

I can't imagine ANYTHING that would require EXACTLY 60 seconds versus
59 or 61 seconds, including taquitos. Hell, if that were the case,
the recipe would read: If it takes you 30 seconds to get the
ingredients from the freezer and into the microwave, cook for X
seconds. Add 1 second of cooking, if yo stopped to add water to the
dog's bowl....

People, people, you fret way too much about exactness.

If you really want 60 seconds of microwaves, add an additional 2 seconds
to your time since it takes a standard magnetron two seconds from power
up to start producing microwaves. You can actually hear this if you
listen carefully.

Cape Cod Bob,

I know it's rediculous but it's a bug in the machine! It shouldn't have

Actually I don't think it's a bug. A microsecond after you push "Start," the
timer will be at 59.999999 seconds, which the display will show as 59
seconds.

You'll sleep better tonight if you check it with a stopwatch. I'm interested
to know if my hypothesis is correct.

Curt,

It's using floor() to round down. What countdown timer would round up???

What will dawn on you next, perhaps, is that cooking for 60 or 61

No, that would give 61 seconds of cooking. Since seconds is the lowest
resolution of the display it will immediately change to 59 and a non
displayed 99 when you push start.

When the cycle starts the time is 60.000 seconds. Almost instantly it
becomes 59.999 seconds, and because the display does not show decimals
and rounds down this is shown as 59.

Peter A,

The sad part of the matter is you can't admit you have NO taste. You're
obviously not schooled in graphic design.

You could have just shut your trap and tried my idea and let us have a

Mine does do. What he noticed is that you set a time say "45". When you
press start it immediately shows "44". It doesn't mean it will only cook
for 44 seconds it simply means internally it has decremented to 44.99
when you pressed start but since it only displays whole seconds it has
no way to display that.

Too bad that you are so envious and insecure. But, since you are still
in your teens, there's a good chance you will get over it.

For your information, not that you will pay any attention, but the
translucent menus are due to a rendering flaw in Firefox and other
browsers based on the same engine. Even so, they are still perfectly
readable.

Perhaps you can direct us to your wonderful, high-class web site. We are
waiting.

I just tried this here at work. I started the microwave at 60, and it
took one second to switch to 59. No doubt microwaves vary, and some
could behave the way it was described earlier, but I suspect the
premise of the original post was bogus.

Mine's not like that. I hit the 1 minute button, and it gives a full
60 seconds of audible labor.

Who on earth hasn't watched the countdown to zero on their microwave? It
doesn't blink from 1 to 0!!! They got that time() right.

Precisely. The 60 second display mark is actually zero (because it
hasn't begun to cook yet). For most of the population it's simpler to
comprehend displayed cooking time remaining rather than cooking time
elapsed. Andy is obviously one of the simple minded... and from
reading the responses he has lots of company.

Doesn't it nuke for the last second while the display reads 0? If so, then
it *is* nuking for the whole 60 seconds.

Let's put it another way: Suppose you set the microwave for *1* second. When
you press the Start button, the display turns to zero almost immediately --
but the microwave *did* come on for that one second, right? It doesn't show
"1" during that last second, because there's less than one second left; "0"
is more accurate.
