Recipe for Aztec-style Hot Chocolate Drink

Aztec-style Hot Chocolate Drink

Ingredients

1 cup skim milk
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1 whole nutmeg seed (freshly ground)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon sugar

Directions

Simmer the milk under low heat, then add in the ingredients, melting
the chocolate. Continue simmering for about 15-20 minutes. Cool and
serve. This hot chocolate has a robust, slightly bitter, earthy flavor.

You totally left out the hot chiles. That would seem essential
to Aztec-style chocolate!

I don't think Aztecs had cows and finding skimed lama milk might be hard
these days. And nutmeg might be out too. So much for authenic.

Not to mention chocolate chips. And he left out the ritual bloody
heart sacrifice.

[snip]

There's also the Mexican hot chocolate called champurrado, which
includes masa harina. Quite nice on a cool day. -aem

And for a commercially available product look for a red and yellow
Mexican product called "Abulita" - Little Grandmother. And avoid the
Spanish version called "Ibara."
