Just curious here - what other newsgroups (cooking or otherwise) do you find
useful, interesting, fun or any combination of the three?

I belong to several other cooking groups - rec.food.recipes,
alt.creative-cooking, alt.food.asian, alt.food.wine, etc. I also belong to a
great cat newsgroup rec.pets.cats.health+behav, and a good movie one,
rec.arts.movies.current-films.

alt.cooking.chat
rec.woodworking
rec.food.equipment
alt.home.repair
rec.crafts.winemaking

I've learned a lot from all of them and contribute when I can. I put about 3
to 5 hours a week into them. No, it is impossible to read every post so I
look at subject lines that may be of interest. They are far more
interesting than watching TV.

the only other "rec." ng I subscribe to is "travel.europe", I
generally prefer ngs in the uk.hierarchy being less US oriented,
but that probably wouldn't suit you!

j*ni,

You should give rec.games.board a look. The usual flame fests flare up, but
it's a solid resource for keeping tabs on the new (and old) of gaming.

I will soon, Mike, but I've been lurking only about a week. Want to
get a feel for the "lay of the land" before posting. I'm still getting
back into Indian cooking after a few years away from it.

rec.pets.dogs.behavior is home for me. That's where I know the regulars
(have met 2 in person) well enough to enjoy the off-topic discussion.

rec.crafts.textiles.quilting feeds my fabric and quilting addiction
though the off-topic stuff isn't as appealing. It is too often medical
and banal for my taste.

Quiltart is a private mailing list that deals more with quilts as
artwork than bedcovers. I like it.

I tried rec.arts.movies.current-films for a while but found the noise
ratio way too high. The discussion was more about the latest
blockbuster when I'm more likely to see the foreign and independent films.

I don't cook nude very often, I would have a couple of extra
ingredients in the pan. =) I am getting shorter, or the girlz are
getting longer!

Nope. When I want to talk movies, my best bet is to label a thread
clearly OT in one of the other newsgroups. I don't do that often, but
oddly enough, that's the way to do it.

Yep Travis. I remember you from the VW.aircooled group. I read it
regularly but seldom posted. Stopped reading it last summer when I sold
my '63 convert ..... 8^( ..... I owned too many cars!

Nowadays I regularly read:

rec.food.recipes, rec.food.cooking, alt.food.barbecue,
alt.binaries.food, alt.food.asian, rec.food.equipment,

Occasionally I check into;

alt.support.stop-smoking (quit about 4.5 years ago, about 6 months after
Steve K. of Thailand), comp.sys.mac.comm, rec.food.restaurants,
alt.travel.new-orleans, alt.home-theater, alt.home-theater.misc,
alt.binaries.pictures.aviation, alt.binaries.multimedia.aviation

RFC gets most of my attention, though I rarely post. But I do try to
keep up. Its a refreshing alternative to "the real world."

Regards,
Dave W.

I am currently keeping up in:

alt.cooking-chat - I read this one once a week or so.

alt.support.stop-smoking (will be 6 months smoke free tomorrow 10/4) - I
read this one every day.

rec.crafts.misc (only read occasionally, as it's a slow group)

and this one, rec.food.cooking, which I read every day.

I will occasionally pop in on rec.woodworking (a hobby of mine) and
rec.food.recipes, though not often, since that group seems a lot more.....
sedate... than this one. I don't post much, but I'm a great lurker.

Miss Jean I have not had a cigarette in Five months, four weeks,
11 hours, 34 minutes and 2 seconds.
That's 3629 cigarettes not smoked, saving $370.14,
and adding 1 week, 5 days, 14 hours and 25 minutes to my life. But who's
counting?

Congrats on the quitting smoking. It really does just keep getting
easier and easier, and it's probably the best gift you could ever give
yourself. I was at two and a half packs a day for about 11 years. I
quit cold turkey and haven't had *anything* to smoke since I quit on
new year's eve almost 3 years ago.

Thanks, Travis. This is my second quit, but this time I won't go back. I
smoked 1.5-2 packs a day for nearly 20 years. My dad has emphysema. I don't
want to be like him. Congrats on your great quit! And thanks for the kind
words.
