Default So hey, I have a few questions

So I've recently rekindled my love affair with cooking, right? Now I'm
all addicted to the Food Network, watching the shows, always open for
new recipe ideas and stuff. Anyway, and this has been bothering me, the
other day it dawns on me that a lot of these cooks, chefs, whathaveyous
don't use potholders/oven mitts, but instead they use their towels. The
only one I've seen using cutesy oven mitts is Giada. So what's up with
that? Is it just not cool to use oven mitts? Should I get rid of mine?

Second question. I've noticed that Rachel uses all these generic
looking products. Her cans read "Chicken Stock" or "Wild Salmon" or
whatever. Her spices are "Cumin" or "Turmeric" or xyz... I mean, I
never see a brand, you know? Does she have people on her staff that
print up special labels to cover up the brands? I'm just wondering.

And, am I the only one that has a problem with Emeril tossing his
kitchen rag over his shoulder - brushing it against his dandruffy hair
every time - and then using the same rag to pull the pizza out of the
oven? I mean, that's pretty nee-as-tee, don't you think? I wouldn't
want to be one of those people in the audience that get to eat the
stuff. Yuck.

Thanks for any insight you could offer,
Peri

Are you planning on starting your own cooking show? If yes: yes, get
rid of yours. If no: keep your towels.

It probably (and I'm just guessing here) has to do with advertising?

ROFL. I'd worry more about getting cheesy icky stuff fromt the towel,
on my hair or clothes. The same rag issue: that's just icky.

Professionl cooks don't use mitts because they're dangerous... if
doused with hot water/grease they'll be badly scalded./burned before
they can get those fercocktah mitts off. Pro cooks only wear shoes
they can instantly step out, usually clogs made from non-absorbant
material, and never wear socks, same reason.

Pro cooks mostly refill dispenser containers from bulk.

You should never eat at restaurants, and especially not at other
people's homes.

Subscribe to this group: alt.tv.food-network. They love to rip apart
FoodTV and it's "celebrities".

1. Towels are cheaper and safer than mitts.

2. It's an advertising/marketing thing. You'll only see namebrands from
sponsors of the shows, i.e.: Reynolds Wrap. Otherwise, the prop dept.
makes up the labels and/or containers.

3. "And, am I the only one that has a problem with Emeril tossing his
kitchen rag over his shoulder...". No his hair stylist probably bitches
about it also! But, in a few more years, that won't be a problem anymore!

I'm sorry, but in all the restaurants I have worked in, I have never
seen anyone sockless!
Towels absorb just as much as oven mitts

They are easier to get rid of than the mitts if drenched

My best insight. Don't watch SemiHoMade and believe it is a cooking
show.

Food Network did one of those "Behind the scenes" type shows and they
talked to the guy who makes up the fake labels. I don't think Food
Network hosts are supposed to be seen using specific brands on their
shows without sponsorship agreements. For ages Emeril would tell people
to "go to the icebox and get one of them frozen things," because
apparently he wasn't supposed to specifically refer to Oreos. If you
watch his show regularly you know that's what he was talking about, but
he wasn't supposed to use the "O" word.

I use woven (not terry) cotton towels because if something happens to
it (gets wet, hot broth or catches fire) I can dump it quickly without
getting hurt.

That's typical on TV. They don't want to endorse a certain brand.

Emeril is just gross and 99% of the food he cooks is disgusting.
