We can use this to send brand new topic questions that are already
covered at length in older posts by directing them to a usenet "message-
id" link of the pertinent post, rather than re-re-create the old thread
anew.


As an example, if a new topic arrives about "Pizza dough recipes" from a
new user, if YOU remember that thread from awhile ago, it would be a
cinch to dig back 50,000 posts or more to get to the beginning of a
"Pizza dough recipe" thread and open it to grab the message-ID tag and
reply to the original poster with the link to that post.

Well, why can't they just google through the groups?

Well, they can but it'll take an unwelcome reply to send them there,
rather than being a good Usenet ambassador and take them by the hand and
help out.

There is the matter of news server retention, which I haven't tested at
any length, so the jury is still out on that aspect. Text-only newsgroups
have a much longer retention rate.

This has been a beta test of the Message-ID url transfer system.

It works. But retention would be a problem as you stated. I get a
little less than a year with this group. Binaries can go from 3-6
months depending on the size of the group. From what I've read I'm
lucky to get that long. I used this feature years ago but forgot
about it. I do look at ABF, so out of curiosity I unsubscribed and it
still found it on the server. It downloaded the picture but didn't
subscribe me or get any other headers. It's pretty cool, but I'm not
sure how much help it will be here. Did you ever find Boars Head
products?

Yes, as a matter of fact! I was in a GIANT supermarket and an employee
walked by wearing a bright and shiny Boar's Head apron and hat. I stopped
him and he told me where the products are, and as I got to the end of the
aisle, I looked at something else and absentmindedly forgot all about it.

Thanks for the feedback on the message-ID methods.

The abf binary example is just a shortcut for the benefit of rfc'ers.

A binary image is still old news after a few days, whether I posted it to
tinypic OR abf or both.

The message-id method saves me time and bother and saves a few bytes of
storage over at tinypic as a result.

I usually do that with the most important item on the list. At least
now you know where to get the best.

It works for me. Not sure how many others will be able to take

I just went and re-subscribed to ABF. I got back to June 1st. I'm
pretty happy with my isp.

I get about a month on this group, and a couple of weeks on the only
binary I've checked recently.
