Sugar free maple syrup

I am new to this list and insulin dependent diabetic, can anyone in the UK
advise me of where I can get sugar free maple syrup. I have tried all the
major supermarkets and health food shops in my area without success.

In anticipation

Hi Phil

Welcome

Sorry I can't help with the syrup - I'd be more concerned
with the pancakes you're putting it on:-)

When you say insulin dependant, are you actually diagnosed
as a type 1 or a type 2? I know it may seem obvious, but
it's not necessarily.

Hopefully someone else will have an answer to the syrup
question.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Sorry Phil,

If you are looking for _real_ maple syrup, I'm afraid you won't find
any that's sugar free. Maple syrup is made by boiling the sap of the
sugar maple tree to concentrate the natural sugar present in the sap.
Regulations require that maple syrup have a minimum specific gravity
of 66º Brix. This simply means that there must be 66 grams of sugar
(mainly sucrose) in every 100 grams of syrup. Put another way, maple
syrup must be 66% sugar.
There are so-called sugar free table syrups on the market but, they
are not necessarily sugar free. The label may say 'Sugar free,
sweetened with fructose', which literally means, 'Sugar free,
sweetened with sugar'.
Like Alan said, I'd be more concerned with the pancakes. I really
enjoy pancakes but have avoided them for a year or more. One day last
month I fell off the wagon and tried a couple of buttermilk pancakes
with some 'sugar-free' syrup for breakfast. Two hours PP was 10.3
mmol/l. Next day I tried a couple of whole wheat & bran pancakes with
the same syrup - 10.2 mmol/l. Back on the wagon.

Ross.
To email, remove the "obvious" from my address.

www.lowcarbmegastore.com or http://www.avidlite.co.uk/ or

My favourite is Jacobs, but the Walden Farms stuff is OK too. These guys
will also sell you low carb pancake mix too, or the raw ingredients to make
your own : )

Correct me if I am wrong but there is no sugar free natural maple syrup.
If you want to play with word you can said no sugar added maple syrup. Or
no sugar added molasses!!
Sunday is pancake day and I use artificial syrup sweetened with artificial
sugar. I soon learned that my BG goes up and I stop using it. What I now
do is that I sprinkled a sachet of artificial sweetener on the pancake of
crepes. Or we make a strawberry sauce with artificial sweetener.

Why does this sound like a debate about beans in chilli : )

Given that us Brits have no means of making natural maple syrup, we're not
worried about unnatural stuff...

Steels breakfast syrup is decent and is very think and sweetened with
splenda. They have an online site but if you use it make sure you order the
right one - they make splenda sweetened products, sugar alcohol sweetened
products and organic products and if you are careful you might get the wrong
one. http://www.steelsgourmet.com/

A comparison while shopping today, but I do not know if it will help
much finding any low carb 'maple' syrup in GB.

All carb count are based on 60 mls (1/4 cup) of syrup.

Total grams from sugar
Real Maple syrup 53 50
Log Cabin brand 53 35
Aunt Jemima Lite 26 25
Howards (Splenda) 1 0
Vermont (Sorbitol 5 0
& Splenda) 3 gm from sorbitol
