Heart Disease: Americans #1 Killer
C a r d i ovascular disease kills one American every 33 seconds -
nearly a million people a year. One in 5 people already has
some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD), w h i ch incl u d e s
high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive
heart failure and congenital defects.
The American Heart Association lists five key risk factors
for CVD:

According to the World Health Organization, one year after
quitting, the risk of heart disease drops by 50%. Within 15
ye a rs, the risk of dying from heart disease for an ex-smoke r
is similar to a nonsmoker.
About 40,000,000 American adults have total blood
cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or above - considered
high risk.
About 10% of children ages 12 - 19 have total cholesterol
levels greater than 200 mg/dL - considered borderline
high risk.
A 10% reduction in cholesterol levels may result in an
estimated 20% reduction in the incidence of heart disease.
The increased risk of heart disease associated with
inactivity is comparable to that for high cholesterol, high
blood pressure or cigarette smoking.
Less active, less fit people have a 30-50% greater risk of
developing high blood pressure.
Nearly 60% of American adults are overweight and 25%
are obese.
Obesity raises blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels;
increases blood pressure; and can induce diabetes.
16 million Americans suffer from Type II diabetes and
two-thirds will die from some form of heart or blood
vessel disease.
