Well, my sugar finally went over 100. It's 109 to be exact. My doctor has
advised a stricter diet. My biggest downfall is sweets. I eat pop tarts
every morning. They're easy and cheap. What can I replace the pop tarts
with?

Also, is there a place that has a list of foods I can purchase at the store?

I realize that my sugar number isn't way out of line but both of my
Grandmothers are diabetics so I am trying to be careful.

Thanks all...

DC

hi DC...

I'm afraid it's not just sugar you need to be watchful of... but all carbs.

Sugar is one of the carbohydrates, but all carbohydrates raise blood
glucose.

Since you're what would be classified as "Impaired Glucose Tolerance"...
it is a smart idea to get a handle on it now. You could put off a
diabetic diagnosis for a looooong time, if not indefinately.

Exercise will help enormously.
Cutting back on the low fiber "white" carbs (pasta, rice, potato, white
bread, corn, sugar) and switching to high fiber carbs (beans, whole
wheat breads, high fiber veggies)... will also do you well.

As for what to sub in for your breakfast?

Try some high fiber whole wheat toast with no-sugar added peanut
butter... and even a little sugar free jam.

You are at the crossroads... do the right things and you won't have to
join our club.

If you are not diabetic, and, at under 110, you are not even close, the
question is TOTAL CALORIES. It makes little difference what you eat, as
long as you exercise, keep the portions in control, and exercise. AND,
while you are at it, exercise.

Your body will convert anything you wat into carbs. As a non-diabetic,
you don't have much wory about timing, as your system will handle it -
the more you exercise, the better it will handle it.

My personal advise is to eat the richest fanciest, most delicious stuff
you can find, just ead very small portions. Do not waste calories on
sugared drinks. ZEAither use artificial sweetners, or no sweetners at
all ( i LIKE black coffee, my wife can't drink it without sweet 'n Low).

Drinks are probably one of the sneakeist sources of calories. and
"natural" , "sugar free" and "no sugar added" does NOT mean "low calorie.

Another source of unnecessary calories is eating by habit.

ONE slice of toast, ONE HALF bagel - a half of potato. save room for
that scoop of Ben and Jerry'snd, of course, don't forget to exercise!

When did this 109 occur? Was it a random test? Fasting test? Do you
routinely test your BG?

As for foods, it would be difficult to advise you since I don't know your
likes and dislikes. Prior to diabetes, I used to make some muffins with
oats, dried fruit and nuts. The recipe called for cream cheese in the
middle, but I don't care for cream cheese, so I left it out. There was no
sugar in the recipe, although I now know that the fruit and oats are just as
bad for the BG as sugar is. I would make a huge batch of these at one time
and freeze them. Each morning, I'd have one of these along with some
cottage cheese, hard cheese or a boiled egg. If this type of recipe won't
work for you, try to find something that would. If you have a recipe you
can make up in advance, you won't have to cook each morning.
