Suggestions for replacing a dead Sub-Zero freezer (besides a _new_Sub-Zero freezer...)
I have a Sub-Zero fridge and freezer (one of the all-fridge and
all-freezer pairs). Though I don't know for sure, I believe the units were installed when the house was built, which was about 25 years ago (not something I would have (been able or willing to) pay for myself, but they were there when I bought the house 10 years ago, so...) The compressor on the freezer has died, and I've been quoted >$900 for parts/labor to install a new compressor (assuming that there is nothing else wrong). If I go that approach and no other problems surface, I have a working freezer, but it is still 25 years old. So far, the fridge is OK, but at 25 years old, it must also be approaching (if not past) its reasonable service life. A new (Sub-Zero) unit would be >$3300. (And another $3300+ if/when the fridge would need to be replaced.) A new unit would have much higher efficiency, etc., but that doesn't cover the cost now (if ever). In any case, the $'s really aren't there for it. So, I am looking at alternatives. I've looked at other (upright) all freezer units. However, I haven't found anything that is even close to the dimensions of the existing unit (36"W x ~73"H x ~24"D), so would require _major_ cabinetry redo just to fit at all (and even then, it wouldn't look very good). I haven't found any all-freezer units (besides SZ) in cabinet depth (real or faux built-in). Also, none I've found so far have ice makers, and that is a fairly important feature for us. So, does anyone have any suggestions? Is repairing this unit reasonable? Does anyone know of an all-freezer unit (at a reasonable cost) that would have an ice-maker and approach the desired size? An alternative would be a "conventional" fridge/freezer. I have seen several side-by-sides at 36" wide, so a pair of them might fit (giving us roughly the storage the SZ pair gives us), and would still be cheaper than just the SZ freezer alone. However, I don't think the adjacent doors would open (no clearance), even if we ignore the extra depth. However, a pair of over-unders might work (and would likely be still cheaper), especially if the doors could hung on opposite sides. Does anyone know of (and can recommend) any such units (again, ideal width 36", ideal depth ~24")? At least 1 ice maker would be needed, but through-door ice/water not needed (or wanted, really). Thanks for any info/suggestions! ted |

This might be something to look at! http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/pro...roductId= 183 also has a matching single door refrigerator for under 2000. |
