You might consider hitting Loew's of Home Depot and get yourself a
sanding "mouse", a vibrating sander with precut sanding sheets.
They're not $$$, and with sales you should be able to snag one
on the cheap.

Plus in the mouse and sand the lumps down. It will go to bright
iron again, then you season as you should anyway. In the future,
you may need to refinish it, or you may find an old iron pan
in a yard sale. Out comes the mouse and you're in business.

Huh?

Leow's and HD are doing well in my area. Last time I was in one
there were mouse-type trim sanders for sale. Did I miss a time-
warp? Does this mean I can't buy precuts for my two (different
branded) trim sanders?

No matter. The principle stands.

Look at the date on the original post. It is 2003

In any case, Wagnerware is smoother. Available direct from Wagner.

What exactly is the problem with the texture on modern Lodge cast iron?
Is it aesthetic or do you actually find it cooks differently? I
haven't used a really old cast iron pan in years but the modern Lodge
pans I have, in service for several years now, work just fine. But what
the heck do I know, I just cook.

I sanded my Lodge skillets thinking it would make food less inclined to
stick when using minimal quantities of oil. The smooth surface certainly
makes steel spatulas quieter, but I'm not sure how much effect it had on
sticktion.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have a ceramic cooktop and the
rules say that all pots and pans have to have flat bottoms. I couldn't
use Lodges for that reason.

I got my cast iron skillet set in HEB (local South Texas supermarket)
for $6.29 a couple of years back. I know they are Chinese, but they work
as well as any other cast iron skillets.

The topic of discussion was the _external_ texture of the bottom of the pan.
It's significant to some of us who use glass cooktops and induction hobs.

Oh, That!

Yeah, busted! I was doing some major overhauling of my laptop
(got a program that won't log on properly, even tho it's ok
on my other cptrs), so I've been uninstalling and reinstalling
various apps, including Agent. When I reloaded my NG's I
totally forgot that I was going to get a lot of ancient
artifacts. I responded to this one before I noticed the
date. My posts normally sort *down* from recent, but
the reinstall had them sorted *up* from oldest.

Sorry

Seems to me the black finish (seasoning) is a little more durable with
a smooth surface. YMMV

Well, then I'm wrong for another reason. I was thinking the OP was
talking about the *interior*. Jan's skillet is probably a Heuck
Classis (I also bought one from HEB). Mine was sufficiently
rounded in the base that it would rock on the grates of my
gas cooktop. I have a bench/belt sander and spent about 20
minutes resurfacing the bottom and now it's OK. I posted
earlier that people who consider buying these should check
the bottoms out before buying (put it on the floor and see
whether it rocks or not.

The Mouse sander is OK for working the interiors when
reconditioning old ironware.

The HEB skillets are a set that includes 6.5", 8" and 10". The box said
they were pre-seasoned and they actually were!

The bottoms are perfectly flat and smooth. The brand on the box is
"Texas Style™ The manufactuter is not listed, however it is distributed
by Parkway Manufacturing & Trading Company, San Antonio. It is made in
China.

I upgraded from 4.2, which was OK. THe original 5.0 has a couple of
glitches in it, so the newer build is supposed to be better.

I'm still getting used to it, but my experience so far is:

Pro: You can nest folders. That's nice feature.

There's a nice "fix/repair folders" feature. Is that
new? I don't recall seeing it in 4.2.

You can handle multiple NG servers and email accts.
I think that's new.

You can handle multiple personas, condifentially.
I haven't tested this.

It's Vista compliant (Yeah, right!)

Con: If you create a new desk (e.g. Usenet) It still tries to
duplicate your folders in the original desk, to what purpose
I can't tell.

It is oblivious to RAR files.

If you're downloading binaries in parts (music, video) it will
join the parts only while they are in the NG window. If you
save the parts, say to Extract RAR files, you can't go to the
desktop and join the exracted parts into a whole again. I'm
still trying to figure what's up with that.

It's Vista compliant (Yeah, right!)

If there's a way to lock in a sig for repeated use, I haven't
found it. I't like to use rotating sugs, but it seems not to
be able to do that eitiher. It's a PITA selecting the sig
over and over message by message.

I've used both earthlink webmail and Thunderbird for email, and
years ago, Eudora. The first two are, in some ways, more feature
rich. I'm sure there's a learning curve problem here, and I'm
on the wrong side of it.

I am suitably chastised.

Parkway is a partner of HEBCo. If you do a Dogpile search you
will find this site:

http://www.amazon.com/Heuck-Pre-Seas...pr_product_top

There is a possibility that, since HEB was handling Heuck, HEB decided
to import their own brand through Parkway. If your set looks like the
one illustrated in the amazon link, that relationship seems more
likely.

Thanks, Alex. Your report is not convincing me to upgrade as I'm
still with WinXP and have no intention of moving to Vista until/unless
my employer forces me to (which has not yet happened). I appreciate
the report and will save my $20 and stick with 3.3 for a while longer.

It's not the newsreader that marks retention, it's the news server. I
use att.worldnet's server, and some forums hang 8-9 months, some last 4
months. But for a server to hang on to 5-6 years, well I went back at
first to make sure it wasn't someone on Google Groups (it wasn't).

It's a little hard to tell if the set is identical from the picture.
Most cast iron skillets look alike from th top view. It's on the bottom
that they differ.

"way-the-heck-south Texas" is Harlingen. Mail comes from the San Benito
PO rural delivery. Our house is less than 5 miles from the Rio Grande.
We are east of Pharr, San Juan and Alamo, but we know the towns well.

Yes. "The Magic Valley" a/k/a The lower Rio Grande Valley. It's in the

They differ in another way too, Janet.

1. All my Lodge stuff has a tear-drop perforation in the handle,
beveled down *from the top*.

2. My one piece of WagnerWare, a 10" skillet, is also perfed
teardrop shape, but beveled from the *bottom* of the handle.

3. My Heuck piece is teardrop shaped, beveled from the top,
BUT there are molded in some thumb grooves on the upper
part of the handle, close to the bowl. If you look closely at
those Amazon pieces shown at that link, you can just make
out the thumb gooves.

I'd say if your pieces are perforated with top beveling and
have thumb grooves, there's a good chance Heuck made them.

4.2 has "Repair selected folders".

Nope. 4.2 does this.

4.2 does this.

4.2 runs just fine under Vista Home Premium on my wife's machine here at home.

You can create a sig for each persona, as well as the default persona. You can
have a different default persona for each folder.

Me too.

Agreed. I've got four of the small 4" square pans for individual servings, and
then five other round pans, from 6" up to 11". The 11" might be the most used
pan I own.

I keep trying to convince myself that I need a Griswold chicken fryer, but so
far have resisted the urge... 8;)

If you buy from eBay, and have a glass cooktop or induction hob, be careful that
you don't accidentally buy a Griswold with the smoke ring. They're sometimes not
mentioned, and very hard to see in small eBay photos.

I learned this lesson the hard/expensive way. Fortunately for my brother, he has
a gas stove, and has been enjoying his new (free) Griswold for over a year now.

No thumb grooves. Smooth handle. I guess mine are just mysterious
Chinese skillets :-)
