Default Chicory in Coffee

There was an episode of Becker (the sitcom) where it was said that
adding a small amount of chicory to coffee improved the taste.
Is this true ?
Where can I buy chicory ?

Just remember you don't need to use as much as you would normal
coffee. 1/4 cup of coffee grounds for a 12-cups coffee maker will
give you a good cup of coffee. The coffee may look dark, doesn't turn
white with cream but it is good.
