Drinking beer and then wine

About drinking Wine and Beer one after the other; some years ago I heard
the ditty: Wine after Beer and you'll feel queer, Beer after wine and
you'll feel fine.

But now I'm thinking I may have remembered it wrong and it should be:
Wine then Beer and you'll feel queer, Beer then wine and you'll feel fine.

Which is it please?

You'll probably get a better answer if you post your question to
rec.food.drink.aphorisms.

Neither. It's "Quality drink makes you feel nice.
Drink cheap crap and pay the price."

Which one makes you want to rearrange the furniture and go to
Bette Midler concerts?

ROFL!!....

I haven't had that response, yet. heh heh.... But, I have discovered
can drink wine after beer with no complications. I don't think I'll
try the other.

It's: Wein auf Bier das rat ich dir;
Bier auf Wein? Lass das sein!

Though there is some question whether the "Wein" doesn't actually refer to
rieslings and the like, but instead refers to "Weinbrand", which is brandy,
or other distillate.

Beyond that, the whole issue is highly disputed and has no basis in anything
objective :0)

broken:-)

Why would it be in German?
I say it's in Dutch:
"Wijn na bier, plezier;
Bier an wijn, venijn."

you will be in worse shape if you drink the drink with less alchohol
first. so if you drink wine (higher alchohol) first, then beer (most
likely less alchohol), you should be ok. everyone is different though.
some people cant drink red white, dark beer, etc, so certain things
mess them up easy.

To answer the OP's question;

He has it right, drinking wine first can get you in bad shape! Does
for me anyway.

I became familiar with the saying because it's illustrated
in a painting on the wall of the Ratherskellar in the student
union on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (along with
several other sayings & pictures in German). If nothing else
if gave my German language class teachers an excuse to have the
the occasional gathering for a beer or two while getting a
lesson in German culture. ;-)

I did not know it was wise to mix grapes and grains at all.

Once I was young and silly and went out with an in-law and drank beer and
shots of amaretto and soda all night. Big mistake.
A few years later, during a visit to Japan, I mixed beer and wine and sake
when I was overcome by the hospitality of the my friends and their collegues
(at their vinyard). It was ugly.

After that I learned not to mix at all. A friend told me: "beer, then
liquor--never sicker....liquor, beer--never fear!

I still don't mix unless it's just one of each the entire night. It's just
not worth it.

I drink dry wine and diet coke one after the other one to mess me and
the other to keep me awake. No more than 1.4L a day or you'll feel it
tomorrow though.

In the original German;

Wein auf Bier,
dass rat ich dir.

Bier auf wein,
lass es sein.

Translation: I recommend [drinking] wine after beer. Don't bother
[drinking] beer and then wine.

You might need to work on that translation.

Wine before beer, never fear,
Beer before wine, everything's fine!

Don't mix your drinks. So whoever came up with that German thing Blue
(Frankenheimer?) which is a mix of Altbier and Coca Cola should be shot. As
for wine and beer there is a saying "Never mix the grain and the grape"
which was fine till someone invented muesli.
